Help needed choosing a laptop!

Hi, All:

I am a college student who's looking to buy a laptop, mainly for writing papers and other academic needs (I have a desktop for other purposes ). Instead of writing a big long paragraph of what I need, I'll just borrow the list conveniently sticked at the top (Thank you for writing that, TheMatt )

It'd be the first laptop I get so I really have no idea what's out there. Any suggestions would be great! Thanks in advance.

The most important thing to me is that it weighs as little as possible, but I also need a screen big enough for me to see. Anyways, my other considerations are:

Budget: $300 - $600

Screen: at least 10-inch

Mobility: doesn't matter, I'll have it plugged in most of the time.

Durability: I'll be carrying it around, so durability would be nice to have.

Multitasking: at the most I'll be typing a paper while browsing online and listening to music .

Gaming: no, my desktop is for that.

Calculations: nope

Storage: mostly papers, so storage not an issue.

Optical Media: probably not.

Operating System: I am thinking about XP, but I'll take vista if that's the only option.

Location: USA

Thanks a lot, guys!

Re: Help needed choosing a laptop!

Well just look for like a dell brand... You can probably get a good one with 600 with Pentium duo and 3gbs of ram .. Or like an Acer... All the other big brands go for way more.. I recently bought an HP and it was 1200.....
