[SOLVED] Endless BSOD after SP3 install, even in safe mode
I have just been helping with a laptop with Windows XP Home edition. First thing I noticed was that it was missing SP3, so I proceded with updating that. But when it rebooted after SP3 was successfully installed, it keeps BSOD'ing with what appears to be an 0x000000E7 error (it flashes by quickly, so hard to see) and just keeps on doing that over and over again, regardless of whether I select safe mode, last good known config or regular boot.
It gets to the welcome screen, makes the windows start up sound, then BSODs, no way to get into anything. :( What can I do, I do not have a windowsXP home edition CD (apparently the laptop was shipped with XP Home installed, but has a WindowsXP Pro CD with it). Also there's a lot of data on it that needs to be saved somehow, so not sure how to do this without losing anything. Any help would be appreciated much. |

Re: Endless BSOD after SP3 install, even in safe mode
Hello Lord Chaos,
![]() Try powering up the computer from a 'Cold Start', while continually tapping the F8 Key. In the "Safe Mode" Menu select the option "Last Known Good Configuration", and follow the on-screen prompts. Once you have done that, go into Control Panel > Add/remove Programs > delete SP3 and start the installation again using this method... XP- SP3 Installation Instructions Important Note: If you have an AMD Processor, read this first. Before installing the XP-SP3, perform these steps FIRST: 1: Use the Windows® Disk Clean up Tool. (Click the coloured Link.) 2: Perform a Disk Defragment....Reboot the computer. 3: Manually create a "System Restore Point"; call it, say, Before SP3 4: Download the standalone version of SP3 from Microsoft®. SP3 Standalone Version ..."Save" it to the computer rather than using the 'Open' or 'Run' options. 5: Once downloaded, Right click the icon > ”Unblock”. 6: Disconnect from the Internet; (pull the power from the modem/router); disable any Firewalls; pop-up blockers, and Anti Virus and Spyware programs (especially Spyware Terminator™ and Norton® or McAfee®). 7: Start the installation and follow the prompts....When finished, reconnect to the Internet first; reboot the computer. Important Note: While the SP3 is installing, do not attempt to do any other tasks on the computer until it has finished, this will ensure a ‘clean’ upgrade. Kind Regards,

Re: Endless BSOD after SP3 install, even in safe mode
I was able to get into Safe Mode with Command prompt, that option worked, then I CTRL-ALT-DEL and started explorer and I was able to get into control panel and uninstall SP3.
The problem is now that the system still BSOD's even with SP3 uninstalled, so now I am really lost as to whats going on. |

Re: Endless BSOD after SP3 install, even in safe mode
You could try a Repair Install . . but I'd be thinking about backing up the data and doing a clean install . . something wacky with that system.
What problems was it having when you started with it?

Re: Endless BSOD after SP3 install, even in safe mode
They were relatively minor, she had a very ressource and memory hogging security system installed (some customized version of f-secure), that brought her old laptop to a crawl.
Its able now to get to the desktop, but it can start loading 4 icons precisely and then it gives the same BSOD every time. It did start giving a lot of trouble when I uninstalled the customized f-secure, because it didn't even really completely uninstall, it just uninstalled the programs, but left several services and 2 startup programs that would nag you about please reinstall this great security system. I disabled those I could find. Seemed to work ok, then I started updating the system (which was out of date) to SP3, then it started BSODing on startup. |

Re: Endless BSOD after SP3 install, even in safe mode
Ok, had to uninstall AVG free edition and uninstall SP3. Then reinstall SP3 and then install NOD32. That stopped the BSODs. Its still buggy though because I can't seem to get rid of that stupid yousee f-secure.
At least its working enough to be used and later backed up. Thanks everyone. |
