acer laptop screen blank

My acer aspire 5100 laptop crashed and would not boot at all - so have re installed VISTA and now the screen is completely blank. I have plugged it into an external screen and all is working. I can press FN F5 and it does not switch to laptop screen - tv screen goes blank - I can see stuff in the background on laptop and if I press FN F6 the backlight comes on for a very short period, But I cannot get the laptop screen to stay on Permanent.

Sounds like the laptops inverter has failed. Take a look on ebay and try to get a replacement. They are usually around $20. 9/10 times a dim screen is an inverter.

When you boot up... can you see anything on the LCD beyond the dark screen? If yes it could be the inverter or the backlight. If none, it could be the LCD itself.

I CAN SEE STUFF BEHIND SCREEN - i HAVE CHANGED THE INVERTER and all was working ok, seems to work for a while then go ono a blank screen. Its all very bizarre. Have had problems with the laptop. It crashed so have had to have Vista re installed, since then not worked properly, so any help sorting it is appreciated

If you have replaced the inverter and the laptop tested well with an external monitor, then it could be your backlight.
