can't get my Inspiron 1100 back on the net

Hi Everyone...hope you can help. My old Inspiron 1100 laptop a couple weeks ago gave me a message I didn't want to hear. It said that the hard drive was no good. So I bought a used Hitachi HD from Ebay with a couple more gigs of space and which already had Windows XP loaded on it. I then exchanged drives...easy! Amazingly it worked just fine except...I can't get on the internet. I put a linksys 2.4GHz notebook adapter (802.11b) in the laptop several years ago to compliment the linksys router and the sytem worked well for those 3-4 years. In fact it still works well sending a signal to another desktop and my Axim but the laptop doesn't seems to get the signal. I tried I think all the little programs that are on the installation cd but still no signal. Please advise (in words on one syllable please) :-) Thank you......ewjili
ps...The notebook adapter puish button now does not pop back out of the laptop when I slide the adapter in and only the power light comes on the adapter while the link light stays off...do I need another notebook adapter?

See if you can borrow one first, just to make sure its that and not what its being plugged into.
