Thinking about a New Laptop - I need recommendations

I'm thinking about buying a new Laptop. I need some help to decide if I make that step or not.

Here are my needs:

1) Price: As low as possible. Definitely under $750. Hopefully around $500.
2) Medium durability - Size doesn't matter much.
3) Use: No gaming, some movie editing and burning, picture editing, create power point presentations, lots of internet usage, lots of writing, and some web design.
4) OS - I'd prefer not to go to Vista, I like Windows XP. Would consider Linux but I have no experience with Linux.
5) HD size: At the moment 40GB has been OK for me. I think 60 or 80 would be more than enough in the future. If it is worth staying smaller (40GB) I'd be willing to get an external HD.
6) Location: Silicon Valley

Thanks for any advice you can give me.
