Constant BSOD and freezes

Hi everybody, this is my first post on the forum.

I'm looking for some help here with a problem I just can't find the way to solve.
I'll explain everything I've been experimenting with detais so maybe on one detail you can find a cause and maybe a suggestion for solution.

First, my computer is a laptop with 1GB RAM, 1.8Ghz Pentiun M processor. It's an ACER TravelMAte 4504.
The RAM is an upgrade I did last year, it's just one module.
Well, back then when I did my memory upgrade, I took out the two 512MB modules because I had many problems on one slot, like computer freezeing and stopping working and so on. I left the one GB module on the slot with no problems and laptop worked fine.
That was until last week when the problems started to appear without any apparent cause.
I started to have BSOD for different reasons mostly when I was running an application that consumes a lot of resources. Well, I only noted the BSOD appeared when that app was running.

Some day, after the BSOD, the chkdsk was running and I lost power and it was interrupted.

A day after that I perceived the BSOD were more frequent with different reasons. The thing then became completelly unnaceptable having BSOD on every restart after one, two, five minutes top.

My antivirus (bitdefender) kept telling me it was blocked some virus and then I realized I had NSAnti.H and after searching on the internet I read it could cause computer hangs, so I thought it may be the cause.
I then dedicated my efforts to eliminate the virus which was not easy due to the BSOD and not being able to be on win too much time.
I ran combofix, spywares and finally bitdefender and managed to clean the computer. (At least I think so since nothing appears on logs)

I thoguht everything was going to be normal but didn't. BSOD kept appearing

I then reinstalled windows just to see it wasn't a problem of drivers ro SW in general because the BSOD was still making mi live impossible

I continued to investigate on forums and I concluded it was the memory. Many posts with the same problems ended on that.
So I bought another 1GB RAM module that I received yesterday.

At first it seemed it was fixed, finally could work on windows for some time. BUT, then something strange happens, my screen is crazy, it was freezed with many colors like watching a bad or broken TV.
I restarted and got one BSOD. Changed the memory module to the other slot but remembered then it was not working a year ago, and of course got more of those screen freezes with crazy display everytime.
So I changed back the module to the working slot and after some other hangs and freezes, I reinstalled chipset drivers and it seems to be "working", because I haven't had any freezes or BSOD until now.

BUT, my computer is running very very SLOW
It's like having only 256MB of RAM or worst!

I read on this forum it may be a problem with IRQ's and I noticed I have multiple shared IRQ's, like IRQ06 for lan, video, usb.
Must say that my BIOS is too basic and it doesn't allow any voltage, tem or IRQ configuration. I've searched an update, but the one offerend on the manufacturer's site, even it's newer on date, it's exactlly the same as my flash bios programm says.

Well, I hope all this story can help so anybody will know how to help me fixing this issue.

Thanks in advance

Re: Constant BSOD and freezes

Well, after 2 hours of work today on a really SLOW pc, the display failed again :(

My screen goes all colors and ends like a crapy TV screen so I just can turn it off. Immediatly after I turn off the pc, I try to turn it on again and it doesn't. Is it maybe a temp problem??
Must say that EVEREST shows my processor temp is on 66C all the time.

Any help?

Re: Constant BSOD and freezes

Post BSoD messages in full. You'll have to write it down as you won't be able to take a snapshot of it.

Re: Constant BSOD and freezes

ok. After I changed to a new RAM I still had some problems. Then I updated all the drivers, specially the video ones, that seemed to be causing the problem.
After that, I got rid of BSOD but had a couple of screen issues. The screen starts to dissapear behind many colors until it's completely colored like a broken TV screen or something. The pc doesn't hang as I don't see any event.
So, this seems to be a problem of my video adapter or the motherborad because video is integrated on my laptop.
I guess it's a problem of temperature because the couple of times appeared when doing extensive work such as antivirus analisys.

BUT, today I got a BSOD again (strange thing). The only thing I changed is the service pack 3 that I installed yesterday. Could this be causing some problems??

the message of the BSOD was IRQL_LESS_OR_NOT_EQUAL (sorry but I didn't copy the text at that moment):
From event properties:
Error code 1000000a, parameter1 805a399d, parameter2 000000ff, parameter3 00000000, parameter4 805a399d

I'm attaching a zip file with the minidump of today's BSOD.

Thanks

Re: Constant BSOD and freezes

thanks Dai.
I've cleaned all the fan exits and ran the chkdsk.
Yesterday I could work all day without problems. I even reinstalled antivirus and no problems. Then I ran a complete virus check but the scanning goes REALLY SLOW

I use BitDefender and normally it's not slow but on my PC it goes to just 6 files per second
After 5 hours of virus checking, I had to let it running overnight, but this morning I woke up to see my screen was bad again. The laptop was dead with that coloring screen.

I don't know what else to do. Guess I'll have to live with it

Re: Constant BSOD and freezes

Hi. . .

I ran the lone mini kernel dump -

The bugcheck was 0x1000000a (0x805a399d, 0xff, 0x0, 0x805a399d), with the probable cause listed as the XP Kernel module ntoskrnl.exe.

0x1000000a = IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL and indicates that a Microsoft Windows or a kernel-mode driver accessed paged memory (or invalid memory) at DISPATCH_LEVEL or above.

What I find interesting here is that the 1st parm 0x805a399d is the same as the 4th parm. The 1st parm is the memory address that was referenced; the 4th is the address that referenced the first. Based on these parms, it appears the suspect driver is "calling itself".

The stack text is not much help here as it simply tells us the kernel called a driver and tried to load it. It does not tell us which driver. The line in red is where the bugcheck was issued that resulted in the BSOD.
Code:
0000001 00000000 nt!IopLoadDriver+0x66d
0000000 8683dda8 nt!IopLoadUnloadDriver+0x45
000000 00000000 nt!ExpWorkerThread+0x100
0000001 00000000 nt!PspSystemThreadStartup+0x34
0000000 00000000 nt!KiThreadStartup+0x16

One option to try and find that driver is to run the driver verifier.
Start | Run | type cmd - hit enter | type verifier & hit enter - the Verifier screen will appear | do the following:
Code:

1. Select 2nd option - Create custom settings (for code developers)
2. Select 2nd option - Select individual settings from a full list.
3. Check the boxes
• Special Pool • Pool Tracking • Force IRQL checking
4. Select last option - Select driver names from a list 5. Click on the Provider heading - sorts list by Provider 6. Check ALL boxes where Microsoft is not the Provider 7. Click on Finish 8. Re-boot
The driver verifier will interrogate your non-Microsoft drivers and very well may end up causing a BSOD. Should this happen, please get the dump file immediately upon re-boot and attach to your next post as it should contain the name of the driver we are looking for.

It would be helpful for me to have an msinfo32 NFO file as well.
START | Run | type msinfo32 - hit enter. Save as an NFO (default file extension) file. Zip it up and attach.

While the verifier is at work in the background, you may see CPU and RAM peak. This is normal.

The dbug log can be found below.

Regards. . .

Re: Constant BSOD and freezes

Thank you very much jcgriff2 for taking the time to look at my dump file.
By now, I have plenty of them on the minidump directory

I did exactlly what you said with driver verifier, but the PC started normally with no BSOD or any kind of problems.
Also, when I try to run msinfo32, it just opens the Help and Support window

BTW, let me describe another symptoms I'm experimenting.
My processor runs almost always at 100% after I run any install or some programms I used to run with no problems before, but speccially I've noted that when I install anything
The laptop becomes REALLY slow, even the mouse get lags, and I have to restart the computer in order to work again.

I really don't know what else to do

I'm thinking about refformatting and reinstalling all over again, but I'm affraid it'll be justa waiste of time as it was last time.

Should I just send it for a hardware fix? Maybe it's the mobo or the video (part of the mobo) that are having problems???

Thanks again

Re: Constant BSOD and freezes

thanks dia, I'll do that, but I'm not optimistic because I already did that BEFORE I decided reformat and reinstall OS, and after that I must say the thing got better because before reinstalling I couldn't even work 10 minutes, but I still have problems of ocassional BSOD and screen going crazy filling with lots of colors, or extremelly SLOW processor.

I'll let you know how the thing goes
