My laptop wont start :(

So my laptop has totally messed up now and because my warranty has expired acer wont fix it for me.

About a month ago, i started to get a blue screen with white fuzzy scribbles over it and everytime i moved it slightly it would crash and restart, now it's come to the point where it just wont start, when i put it on the screen is pitch black, the cd/dvd rw makes a noise, the laptop remains on but nothing comes up on my screen, i've told a few people about this and they say their maybe an issue with the hardrive.

Just for info, the laptop is an Acer Aspire 5100 running on vista. I think something is broken inside, i'm not willing to pay more than £50 to get it fixed, can anyone advise me on what to do.?

Have you tried it attached to an external monitor?

If you have a PC with a monitor there, unplug the monitor from the desktop and plug it into the laptop. There should be a VGA/display connector in your laptop. Power ON the monitor then power ON the laptop.

That's going to be far too complicated, it's a family pc and i don't think i can do that, however i will try but i'd prefer if my laptop was working :|

I understand. Troubleshooting is not easy if you have no parts to spare or the tools to use in the process. That is why repair shops exist. Because whatever thing you can't, don't or won't do... they will do for you - for a fee.

Yes i did find out about the fees, it's far too expensive, £50 just to check what's wrong with it and then something around the same price as the laptop to get it fixed. It's not worth it, would be better to just purchase a new laptop.
