Standby and Hibernation problems - compaq nx9010

I decided to clean install windows xp on a compaq nx9010 laptop, because it was quite slow (even if it was clean of malware) and I actually enjoy starting from scratch once in a while.

I got this laptop a few months ago, and it seems it had xp installed from factory. I used a winxp home sp1 cd from another compaq laptop and so far, all good -- surprisingly it didn't ask for the product key, even if i have the sticker, i assume it was a custom compaq winxp cd and it detected the compaq hardware so it didn't ask(?).

I installed sp3 and all windows updates except for the new version of windows search which i despise (although i didn't install sp2), and after that, the standby option was enabled (before it was gray and not available on the shutdown menu).

But when i try to standby or hibernate it doesn't work: it doesn't really go on standby or creates the hibernation file, it just dies there (black screen when trying to standby, blue winxp splashscreen when trying to hibernate).

So I flashed the bios to the last revision (25 iirc), and installed the manufacturers' tools (including lidswitch policy). Didn't work.
And there is no power management options in the bios setup.

I finally managed to standby and hibernate by removing all the usb devices (including the mouse), and making sure there is no cd spinning in the drive (even if i disabled autoplay with tweakui). But this is terribly inconvenient and sort of defeats the purpose of a laptop. Besides, i'm quite annoyed because both standby and hibernation worked before, so it should be a software issue.

To test further, i installed ubuntu 8.04 (dualboot). I didn't have time to play with it --and when booting it displays some errors (under the splashscreen)that look like power management issues. Neverhteless, hibernation works flawlessly (even with usb devices mounted). On the other side, I couldn't get standby to work.

I could live without windows, if it wasn't because of work... Do you have any ideas on what to try, to get standby and hibernation working under windows? I'm out of ideas... and google didn't help (in fact it seems to be a very common problem -- and not many solutions around)

Thanks in advance!

Hi M,

I think that since you got the XP CD from another Compaq laptop that it may have some drivers that are unique to that model (if ever each of these laptops differ in model).

At the moment, check with DEVICE MANAGER. If you see any marks in Device Manager, try reinstalling ALL the drivers for your model.

My suggestion is do a fresh install. Get hold of a retail XP CD. D/load and install all related drivers for your model from Compaq website.
