Dropped laptop, help needed!
Hello,
I have a Sony Vaio laptop which is 18 months old and I accidently dropped it yesterday. Now when I try to switch it on it shows the following message Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: System32/Drivers/Ntfs.sys. You can attempt to repari this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair I have just moved halfway across the world and didn't bring any setup CDs with me. Is there anything I can do to repair it (could it be something has come loose during the fall causing the error message?. The laptop laned on one corner which has cracked trhe case a little but there doesn't appear to be any other damage. Thanks Kevin |

Re: Dropped laptop, help needed!
Hi Kevin,
Looks like you really need to get hold of an XP install CD as symptom could be caused either hardware (hard drive) or corrupt Windows file. If it is hardware failure, I believe you have a malfunctioning HDD since this is a victim of a fall. The message that you see could just be a result of this malfunction and a fresh install of XP is needed. On the other hand if this is just a corrupt Windows file (HDD is still good and working), you then have to copy the NTFS.SYS into your laptop (see this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822800)

Dav is back
well man the only thing is that its like the hdd of your laptop has moved a bit that's why some files cant be recognized. Just open it carefully and try putting it back by making sure all the pins on the interface have contact with the HDD. If not the other solution is to repair the windows. That`s the way the truth and the life of your laptop |
