Laptop Making Weird Noises

I use a Compaq v5000...so its a little over 2 years old. Anyways...it recently started to randomly begin humming loudly...to the point where the whole thing is vibrating a bit...and sometimes I'll start hearing ticking on the side where the humming is coming from too (same side as the fan).

When it does this, my whole computer starts slowing down to the point where things are freezing, and it has turned off on me once too. Usually, I'll have to restart a few times and it will keep doing this...though after a few restarts it seems to fix itself. Another thing I noted is that when it had been doing this, firefox would use up like all of my computer's active memory (or whatever the technical term is...100% on the alt-control-delete screen). But other programs like internet explorer didn't. Any suggestions?

Re: Laptop Making Weird Noises

Does the sound start from power ON? Try removing the HDD and observe if you hear the same sound after some time. Use a new/working HDD for testing can help also.

If you think it comes from the fan side, then it could be the fan or the bearing. Clean the vents/heatsink and fan and see if it helps. If not then consider getting a new heatsink/fan assembly.

Re: Laptop Making Weird Noises

Is there anything I should do before removing the HDD? Or anything I need to do while taking it out? I'm not the most computer savvy person, so I don't want to mess anything up. Also...yes, the sound does start from the time I turn the power on...though the problem does sometimes arise a few hours after a start-up that was problem free.
