Please Help... Computer Shutting Off!

Hey all, I have a Compaq V5000. My computer keeps shutting itself off after running for only about 2 minutes. I ran the Hard Drive test and it came back failed, so I assumed "okay i will replace the hard drive, reinstall windows and i should be good to go". I wish it had been that easy. Now that I have a different Hard Drive in there the computer is turning on, and as its 'Checking Hardware Configurations' and eventually "ready to install windows" the computer just shuts off! Clearly my belief that just relplacing the Hard Drive seems to be inaccurate? Somebody PLEEASE lend some advice or some help, i'm growing increasingly irritated!

Re: Please Help... Computer Shutting Off!

IF you have a failing Power Supply the hard drive will flunk the test because it's under powered or shutting off during the test.
You need to check the voltages and temps if your system is able to boot go into the Bios and look for a PC health page or system health, What is the rest of your model number?

Re: Please Help... Computer Shutting Off!

Hi, Thank you so much for getting back to me! I really know little about working on computers or finding info like the temps and such on them. My computer is the Compaq Presario V5000 (on the little service tag sticker on the bottom of it it gives V5303NR but i dont know if that is part of the model number you are looking for). Sadly, I think I have done more harm than good. Another user told me I should clean out my hear sink, so in my attempt to get to the heat sink, I somehow snapped off the bracket holding the RTC Battery to the board. I have attempted placing the bracket back exactly where it belongs and holding it there with electric tape (clearly im very pessimistic that this might actually be a feasable solution).

I finally got to the heat sink and cleaned it out (wasnt too bad, a little dust/lint). I put everything back together and attempted to turn on my computer. The power indicator is lighting up as though the computer is on and running normally, but now the screen is staying black. Could this be due to the RTC Battery issue or did I mess something else up inside? I obviously feel embarassed, and even more angry that these additional problems are ones that I can only blame myself for. Please help and let me know if this is even salvagable or should I think about pricing new laptops?

Well I didn't realize it was a laptop, when you boot try pushing the FN key and F7 if no response try FN &F8,then F9. You may also want to check to make sure the cable from the screen did not come undone, the battery bracket may be an issue as most of the time the - post of the battery connects to the motherboard through the clip.

Re: Please Help... Computer Shutting Off!

Okay, so I was able to take out the heat sink, blow it all out (though wasnt really too dirty), and put it back on (with compound applied between processor and heat sink). Now my computer wont get any power. When i plug it in the "charging light up indicator" flashes color for like .5 second before just going dark as if its not plugged in. It wont turn on or anything. Any ideas on what might be going on here?! I made sure that everything was plugged back in.

Re: Please Help... Computer Shutting Off!

yes i was able to get the metal piece that the battery actually sits on, i got the other end of it soldered back into its place on the motherboard... no juice getting to the computer though.

(someone told me that the internal battery only matters for the clock, etc and is not essential for computer use, is this true?) I really hope I can get my laptop going again as I don't want to have to invest in a new one.

Re: Please Help... Computer Shutting Off!

The internal battery keeps voltage on the Bios chip to retain the settings and yes it will run without it but will have to rediscover the components every time it starts.
But back to the no power issue it did have power before you took it apart right?
I think you need to recheck all the connections and make sure you don't have a solider trail from what you soldiered to another circuit on the board.

Re: Please Help... Computer Shutting Off!

I will get that thing ripped back open when I get home from work this evening. It did have power before I took it apart (granted it would shut off after like 2 mins, power is power).

I really appreciate you sticking with my issues and trying to help me out.
