Power On Problem - Compaq Presario
I'm building a digital picture frame using Fedora 9 and an old Compaq Presario 1200 (12XL310).
The software piece is complete. After disassemblying laptop, it stopped turning on. When I turn it on I can see the Compaq logo and I can see how the Fedora Kernel starts decompressing. After a few seconds, the laptop turns itself off. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks! |

Re: Power On Problem - Compaq Presario
I think I found the problem. I was turning the laptop on without the heatspreader over the microprocessor. I guess it was overheating, or turning itself off, before overheating as a precautionary measure.
Can anyone confirm? |

Re: Power On Problem - Compaq Presario
Thank you for your responses. I have two questions for you. Please understand I'm a beginner so bear with me...
What's the paste in the CPU and how do you change the paste in the CPU? Now I have another question for you. The display started flickering the other day. Could that be related to the CPU or do you think that has to do more with a defective connection between the display and the motherboard? |

Re: Power On Problem - Compaq Presario
The CPU has Thermal Paste between it and the heat sink to effectively transfer the heat between the two, any time you disturb the paste you have to clean it off and replace it, These instructions are for desktops but will give you an idea of what needs to be done.>
