Problems Playing DVD-R Movies Recorded

I have a HP Pavilion N5425 laptop, running XP Professional. It cannot read the DVD+R format. When I tried playing a DVD-R, I realized that most of the time, My Computer, DVD/CD-RW Drive, shows that the DVD-R is empty. There are no files.

I have to open the CD drive manually and close it again repeatedly to see if it could read the DVD-R inside. One time I got lucky, it showed 2 folders inside. I was even able to play the DVD-R using WinDVD.

My laptop has no problems reading CD data, VCD and DVD movie. Somehow, it is very inconsistent and has difficulties playing DVD-R movie. Of course, if XP cannot detect the information on the DVD-R, it is obvious that I would have problems playing the movie using WinDVD.

How can I get my CD drive to play DVD-R movie more consistently?

Thanks,
Phil

Re: Problems Playing DVD-R Movies Recorded

Hi Mike:

I appreciate your quick response.

Initially, I was using PowerDVD on my laptop. Yesterday, someone suggested that I install and try WinDVD. After the installation, I downloaded the K-Lite Mega Codec Pack Full. It fixed/updated the codec on my laptop, as you have stated. This program is still on my laptop. When I used WinDVD, I noticed that it was still having problems reading the DVD-R movies, which prompted me to ask for your help.

I tried to run PowerDVD again to see if it is better than WinDVD. Unfortunately, I am getting the error message, "DVD Error - Error Code: 8004027B, DVD-Video playback graph could not be built due to insufficient decoders."

What should I do now? Should I rerun K-Lite Mega Codec Pack to see if it will fix the codex on my laptop? I already ran it once when I installed it on my laptop.

Thanks,
Phil

Re: Problems Playing DVD-R Movies Recorded

Hello phil ,

have you tried updating the firmware ? you will have to go to the home site to download it & get the direction to install it .

also

Step 1: Start Registry Editor
Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK. Registry Editor starts.
Step 2: Delete the UpperFilters registry entry

1. In Registry Editor, expand My Computer, and then expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
2. Expand SYSTEM, and then expand CurrentControlSet.
3. Expand Control, and then expand Class.
4. Under Class, click {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.
5. In the right pane (topic area), click UpperFilters.

Note An UpperFilters.bak registry entry may also appear. To delete the UpperFilters registry entry, you must click UpperFilters and not UpperFilters.bak.
6. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
7. When you receive the following message, click Yes to confirm the deletion of the UpperFilters registry entry:
Are you sure you want to delete this value?
The UpperFilters registry entry is removed from the {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} registry subkey.

Note Do not exit Registry Editor. You must have this program for the next step.

Re: Problems Playing DVD-R Movies Recorded

Hi Mike:

There was no UpperFilters, so I could not remove it. I deleted LowerFilters. After rebooting, I looked at the CD-Drive. It allowed me to choose WinDVD as my default DVD player. This should be the result of removing the LowerFilters.

I still encounter the same problem. From My Computer, CD-Drive, I can only read one of my DVD-Rs. The other DVD-R shows 0 files. Yet, one time, I was able to read its contents and play the movie on it.

I was able to play the good DVD-R in WinDVD. When I tried to play it on PowerDVD, I still get the same error above, "DVD Error - Error Code: 8004027B, DVD-Video playback graph could not be built due to insufficient decoders.".

Thanks,
Phil

Re: Problems Playing DVD-R Movies Recorded

Hello Phil ,

now is the power dvd a paid for program

or is it a program to wich was preinstalled on the system from when you bought the system

I do now those types of programs have to be upgraded ( purchased ) be for they will allow you to use all their functions

you may have used your free / trial time allowed

now how do you have the jumpers set on both of the units ?

by windvd playing on one unit it shows that it is working properly and that you may have the jumpers set wrong

it could also be your cables / cable do you know if it is a 40 pin cable 0r an 80 pin ?

Re: Problems Playing DVD-R Movies Recorded

Hi Mike:

I got the PowerDVD program from my friend. It was purchased. Previously, I was able to use the PowerDVD program to play my DVD-R movie. It worked 4 days ago.

After installing the WinDVD and codec, I have problems using the PowerDVD program.

There must be some misunderstanding. This is a notebook computer, so there are no jumpers. The DVD drive was in the computer when purchased. Both PowerDVD and WinDVD are programs to play DVD and VCD movies on the computer.

Oh, I should clarify myself. Basically, I have 2 DVD-R movies. My laptop can play the movie on 1 DVD-R. The second one freezes my laptop. After it gets out of the freeze mode, I see 0 files on the DVD-R disk, under My Computer, CD drive. One time, I was able to play half the movie on this DVD-R. It is not empty. The problem could be with the second DVD-R disk. I am not sure why my laptop has problem playing this particular DVD-R movie.

Basically, I have 2 problems now. The first is to see the DVD-R movie on a disk that my laptop has problems reading. The second is to get rid of the PowerDVD error message and to use this program.

Re: Problems Playing DVD-R Movies Recorded

Hello ,

okay , gotcha

okay now the dvd-r that you are useing that has the issues / can you check it with another system like your friends system

does it do the same on his system / a quick check for that disk

now you may have to many codec's

i have sean this befor / your system gets confuse on which one to use !!!

since you know that windvd is working correctly then leave it alone

now do you still have power dvd on disk ? if you do then uninstall it / then do a search for it / what ever your search finds ( deleat it ) then do a disk cleanup & defragment your system

do you have this program ( C-Cleaner ) if not you can get it here

when you have it installed use it in its default mode ( right after it got installed with no adjustments ) you will want to use the (cleaner option & the registy option )

then defrag again

then reinstall power dvd

then check to see if you can play your movies

let me know

Mike
