compaq presario 700
my compaq presario 700 turns on and starts up but the screen stays black theres a pointy black thing on the top righthand side of the laptop if i play with it the screen turns on but will not stay on

Looks like a dying LCD. Have you tried with an external monitor? Try also reseating the video cable that connects the LCD to the motherboard.
