Sony Vaio; Missing or Corrupt start up file
Normally, I can figure these things out, but now I am at a loss.
This morning, my computer was booting up fine, but during the boot up my power supply failed and the computer shut off. Once I plugged it back in and tried to boot it up, it gave me an error for a missing or corrupt file during the boot up. One of the missing files seems to be the setupdd.sys file. I read that it could be a RAM issue; however, that does not seem as likely considering it booted up fine before the power supply failure...seems more likely that it possibly corrupted the config sys before it shut off. (Although, what do I know.) Problem is, how do I fix this problem and get my computer to boot up without losing all the data on my hard drive. Unfortunately, I have a few additional files that I need on my laptop so that I cannot blow it out. I blew the laptop out about 4 months ago, and have most everything else backed up...BUT, some of the files I have not backed up since. (Yes, lesson learned!) I have tried to get into the SAFE mode, although I cannot seem to get access to those options. In fact, I cannot get into the computer set-up menu either. The back-up disks that I made do not seem to make a difference, it just provides me with other missing files (the back ups consist of 9 disks). So, any help in getting me back into my laptop to at least copy the necessary files would be GREATLY appreciated. After I back up the files, I can always blow it out again. THANKS ahead of time...I know all of you have been helpful to everyone here, and I have confidence someone can help me retrieve my files. :D |

Re: Sony Vaio; Missing or Corrupt start up file
It looks like it should work; however, there is a problem using this method.
The disks that I have are system restore disks that I created the day that I received the laptop. The laptop did not come with a XP recovery disk of its own, and all that information is stored on the Vaio recovery disks. So, when I put the disks in, it boots to a screen that only gives me two options: Restore C:Drive and Restore Complete System. Neither option talks about a repair. In fact, I am not getting the setup screens that the XP setup would see, but instead getting the Sony Vaio screens. Does this mean I need to go and actually buy the XP disks? UGH...I hope not! |

Re: Sony Vaio; Missing or Corrupt start up file
Yup... as it would not work with recovery/restore CDs
