Help with an old HP XT512

Hello my fellow people,
I write to you all because I need help with my laptop. Its an old HP model as I said on the title. The usb connectors were damaged and so I had ordered a replacement motherboard to switch it around. Before I got to do so, the power in my apartment went out while the laptop was on and the laptop shut down (no battery installed on device). After I turned the power back on it worked for about 5 minutes and then it died on me. Not even the orange Standby light would turn on (the one that lights on even when the laptop is off). So I decided to go ahead and replace the motherboard to see if this would help ( I figured motherboard maybe was friend when the power went out since it did smell kinda burnt). After I switched it though it would still not turn on. I really dont know what is going on. Can anyone maybe give me any pointers here? Im guessing maybe the power plug is damaged? I bought another one off of ebay to try it out. Until then I am stuck here. Thanx in advance for your help!

Have you checked the output of your AC adapter? If you have replaced the motherboard and still get the same symptoms, start with the AC adapter first then try removing each device (start with the RAM, replace it with a good/working module for testing only) which might cause the problem.

Yea thats my next step. I am waiting to receive the new a/c adapter in the mail and hopefully discover that that was the issue. Will also try replacing the RAM as well. But I dont think its that because the system does not even light up. Meaning it doesnt even hint that theres power running through it.

Ok so I finally received the A/C adaptor in the mail. Tried it out and still no luck. Any ideas? Help? Anything?

Re: Help with an old HP XT512

With a new adapter in place, I suspect your 'replacement' motherboard may be defective. As in my previous post, test the output of the AC adapter first. Make sure it matches the laptop requirement or base it from the original adapter label. If the output voltage measures OK then for sure there is an issue with the motherboard.

A few things to check on the motherboard. Visually check the DC jack connector on the laptop side. This may have lifted off the board. Also try powering ON with ONLY keyboard, LCD and motherboard. Remove everything else (i.e. HDD, CD/DVD, WiFi, Modem, etc.). If you get to power ON without any of these devices, put them back one by one while powering ON each time.
