Increasing wireless internet reception
I'm having problems with my wireless internet. It works great in the study, but I walk 5m out of the room and the connection just doesn't hold. Is there anything I can try and do to make the connection better without spending money. Or if I have to resort to it what would be the best thing to invest in. I've heard that you can buy a external antenna that will boost wireless reception, so yeah any help would be appreciated.

Re: Increasing wireless internet reception
youi did not mention when this problem started. also what brand or kind of
router,, also is the wifi card built into the laptop or is it a pcmcia type of card ?? you might invest in a high quality router, I tried 3 different routers till I found the one that works for me..I can connect easeily the length of a foot ball field in three directions and quite a bit futher in the fourth direction..300 to 500 feet no problem so, my point of all this is.. in my case,,,the router is very critical..one that works for me may not work for you..a good router from ebay can be had for + or - 40 dollars depending on how frugal you shop..the one I am useing is a belkin wireless G plus MIMO model f5d 9230-4.delivered to my door from ebay for 46.72 new in box.. this is not meant to advertise or promote this brand,, it is only information as to what is working for me after trying 2 other brands... I hope I have been some small amount of help for you.... |

I'm looking at the router now.. it's a AirPlus G 2.4GHz Wireless access point according to the top of it. I have an inbuilt wifi card. The problem has only started in about the last month or so and I would say is becoming more frequent.
Oh and the brand is D-Link Sorry about the triple post but i think I get whats it's actually called now. Its a D-Link Airplus G DWL G700AP And also it seems to happen more while I'm playing an online game. Could that have anything to do with it? Last edited by dai; 10-15-2008 at 11:26 AM. |

Re: Increasing wireless internet reception
Think about what may be in the way of your signal when moving rooms or whatever....
fridge, microwave, fluourescent tubing, signal senders (for TV satellite boxes), remote controls, metal in walls, thick brick walls and more... These can all have a say in your signal strength. The Belkin routers while good are not the best and are prone to dropouts (personal exp.). I don't really want to give recommendations either as everyone will have a debate on all that instead of solving your issue which is important. Failing to solve it because of one or more of the above getting in your way may need you to buy a further piece of equipment. The more antennae your router has the better the signal. Draytek offer some of best routers around. There... I've made a recommendation!! |

Re: Increasing wireless internet reception
Not necessarily. If the sender is for TV then try changing the channels on the sender. If the box does not allow for this then try moving them around if your cable allows it. Otherwise I'm afraid you may need to buy a different sender that allows the changing of channels. I have one that has four different channels and works fine without interfering with my laptop anywhere in the house.
So try that or you may find the purchase of same or booster for your wireless the only option. |
