Re: Sound Card cannot start .. help please

I suggest to uninstall the drivers first in Device Manager (I assume this is XP, right?). Then go to ADD/REMOVE... usually there is a program installed that is related to SOUND/AUDIO. Uninstall that too. Reboot and let Windows pick the device up. Go to Device Manager and see status.

Also make sure you install Chipset drivers BEFORE you install any video or audio drivers. I have had not so good experiences when done the other way around.

EDIT:
If this is a laptop, please give exact model number.

Re: Sound Card cannot start .. help please

Are you sure it's AC'97 compliant or is it HD compliant? I had a huge problem with this at work and it ended up that AC'97 drivers were being installed when it was supposed to have HD drivers.

Realtek = real pain

Re: Sound Card cannot start .. help please

the computer detects it as realtek ac 97 .. and since it's on a hunk of crap laptop I don't think that it would be hd compliant. I did install my video drivers before trying the chipset drivers though.. I'm going to roll back the system before I installed the video drivers and then install the chipset drivers and such... lets see if that works..

Re: Sound Card cannot start .. help please

ok.. now here is the kicker... so I roll back the system so it's at a time BEFORE I installed my video driver and I go to install my chipset.. when it runs it gives me an error saying that it cannot find my vga driver.. so I install my ati video card and the same error comes up.. so I can't get my chipset to install.. I'm getting really frustrated .. all over sound

Re: Sound Card cannot start .. help please

provide the Vendor ID and Device ID of the card, you can find that in Device Manager under HARDWARE ID you can find that under the devices DETAILS tab

Get the XP drivers here:

http://support.gateway.com/support/d...&param=1009033

Is this a downgrade from Vista? If not and it came with XP originally, do you still have your recovery partition in the HDD? If yes, try the steps here:

http://support.gateway.com/s/SOFTWAR...LXPH1su7.shtml

or you can use the User Guide here:

http://support.gateway.com/s/Mobile/...cC/8511264.pdf

Re: Sound Card cannot start .. help please

hardware id number :
PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_4370&SUBSYS_0300107B&REV_02
PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_4370&SUBSYS_0300107B
PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_4370&CC_040100
PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_4370&CC_0401

also , I still get that code 10 error after installing that amd driver on gateway's site..

also I don't have the recovery partition ..

I kind of "inherited" this laptop from a family member , so I don't really know what has happened to it .. I do know that this was taken to the "geek squad" at best buy once (stupid thing to do in my opinion).

It came installed with XP , so this isn't a vista downgrade.

It's really obscure though that when I format and reinstall the system with the "gateway system restore disc" it doesn't ask for the drivers disc at all.. and I have the driver pack that came with the computer.. this process would be a lot easier if I could do that.

Re: Sound Card cannot start .. help please

As per your post... do you have the Gateway restore CD and have you tried using it? When you installed XP did you use an original copy of XP or a burnt copy or the recovery CD of 'another or different' laptop?

Based on what was posted so far, I am leaning towards doing a reinstall. So far I know is that you have restored back to the time prior to installing video drivers but since that did not solve the issue, I think you must consider doing a fresh install.

Without an existing recovery partition, you can use your XP install CD and drivers from the Gateway website. Another option is order a restore/recovery CD from Gateway (specific for your model)... which I believe is really needed and a good investment (they are reasonably priced, anyway -- like cheap ).

Re: Sound Card cannot start .. help please

I've done that with the recovery disc three times now... the thing is that when I do it it doesn't ask for the drivers disc , and I have all the drivers in the driver pack.. so I'm wondering what the hell is up with that.

I'm going to try and format/reinstall again ... and then use the drivers from the website.
