[SOLVED] [moved from vista]Boot manager occurs when powering up laptop

Hi,

I purchased a dell inspiron 1720 on 14/08 and almost each time i power up the laptop i get a beeping sound and then the boot manager screen appears and requests me to choose which OS i want to use... i only have vista installed, and so i click on vista and then it powers up normally, the beeping is worrying me!

I've had a look on a few forums but this came recommended so thought i would give it a whirl before taking the laptop back.

Is this a problem with the laoptop itself or is it something that can be fixed easily? I have gone to the Control Panel > System > Advanced System Properties in the left pane. Under Startup and Recovery, click settings and unchecked the "Time to display list of operating systems:" The problem still occurs at start up though.

Anyone got any suggestions on how to fix this before my ears start to bleed from the high pitched beeping? Much appreciated

Re: Boot manager occurs when powering up laptop

jc,

thankyou for the reply, however the beeps are of different numbers each time, and occasionally the beeps do not occur and the laptop powers up as it should.

Would it be advised to take the laptop back with it being less than 1 month old?

Re: Boot manager occurs when powering up laptop

Re: Boot manager occurs when powering up laptop

I'm going to try my best, it's a shot in the dark, here goes

press your WINDOWS key and R, you'll get the RUN box, type in MSCONFIG and click OK or press enter, click on the BOOT tab and put what you see in the box on here.

Re: Boot manager occurs when powering up laptop

Hi. . .

elephant007 has a good idea... it would be interesting to see what is found in msconfig.

Here is mine (I have "No GUI Boot" check - this simply changes Microsoft "Bars" boot-up screen):

I would, however, take it back and get a new one.

JC

@elephant007 - thank you - feel free to "take a shot" anytime!

Re: [moved from vista]Boot manager occurs when powering up laptop

did the beeping start from the first boot up after you got it or has it started afterwards
set the time out box to 20secs
you need some time to press a key when you need to

Re: [moved from vista]Boot manager occurs when powering up laptop

Dai,
the beeping has started in the last few days, i had the laptop working fine for around 10 days before this first occured. No it happens at almost every start up if not everytime. I will set the timeout to 20 seconds and see if this helps to solve the problem.

Many thanks for your reply.

Re: [moved from vista]Boot manager occurs when powering up laptop

see if there is something listed on the startup tab that you have uninstalled
my desktop beeps during the post screens because i have water cooling and it does not recognise that the radiator fan is the defacto cpu fan and thinks it's missing
do you hear your cpu fan kick in when you boot up

Re: [moved from vista]Boot manager occurs when powering up laptop

Dai,

I've done 3 start ups since changing the timeout and so far no beeping... boots straight to windows. Have not installed or un-installed any programmes that are not easily recognisable since buying the laptop so fingers crossed it is fine now!

Re: [moved from vista]Boot manager occurs when powering up laptop

What did you change the timeout value to?
It's very odd that didn't see more than one entry, doesn't necessarily mean that there's not a double boot entry.
If it's working, that's all that matters.
