[SOLVED] cd/dvd problems
I have a toshiba laptop runing windows XP with 512 mgs of ram, 1.3 gig processor. my cd/rom has disappeard and I have downloaded the drivers from toshiba. it says I have the drivers already installed. I had this problem before twice. once I formatted the hard drive, and fixed the problem. which really is a last resort since I don't want to loose anything. I have no way of backing anything up. the other thing I tried was system restore the second time this happened. which worked but since then I had several viruses and turned restore off to pevent replication of the virus.
Can anyone help |

Re: cd/dvd problems
Have you just installed anything like a digital camera?
Try this if you feel comfortable editing the registry. 1. Go to Run, then type regedit then press return 2. Locate the UpperFilters value under the following key in the registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} 3. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK. 4. Locate the LowerFilters value under the same key in the registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} 5. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK. 6. Quit Registry Editor. 7. Restart your computer. NOTE: After you remove the Upperfilters value and the Lowerfilters value, if you notice lost functionality in a particular program, such as CD recording software, you may need to reinstall that software.

Re: cd/dvd problems
it does show up in the device manager, with an exclamation point, so I clicked update driver and I got a message cannot start this software, code 39,
also dai I did turn restore back on, but it does me no good now, since I have no restore points prior to this problem |

Re: cd/dvd problems
I did right click and uninstall. when reinstalling the driver, it says new hardware found and identifys the cd/dvd rom, with a balloon, but still doesn't show up under my computer. and still has and exclamation point under system properties, I have also been to the toshiba wensite and downloaded a driver with no luck.
