Dell laptop crash/freeze

I have a Dell Inspiron 8100 which randomly freezes. I have run regcure and updated the BIOS drivers. I have noticed that the two fans on the back do not spin and the bottom does get warm but it is not always warm when it freezes. Also it has an incredibly slow speed and applications can take an age to activate. It runs on Pentium III with 256 RAM. I know this is pretty poor but can anyone advise how I can improve this system without breaking the bank?

Cheers

Hi Shinehead, and wecome to TSF.

Without any doubt at all, you need more memory.........and its not expensive at all.

Or you could go through all this.

Computer freezes

I can advise you about either way. Let me know.

Re: Dell laptop crash/freeze

Thank you very much for the advice. COuld you tell me which type of memory I need to buy. I noticed from your thread that you advised someone to remove Norton 360, I have Norton Internet Security 2008 on the laptop but Avast on my pc. Avast is very good and I have had no problems with it at all so I will install it on the laptop too. Thanks again for the very helpful reply.

Cheers Andy

Hi Andy,

Some very good advice can be found Here

If you do want to get rid of Norton (and you should) make sure you use the proper removal tool, the link is on that other page.

Good luck.
