Compaq recovery problem

I have a Compaq Presario laptop which somebody kindly dropped for me. Needless to say the hard drive had to be replaced and I have now had 2 recovery discs from HP. Neither work. In both cases windows loads up and softwars also loads and it gets as far as FBI gui manager and installs up to arpund 40% before saying that recovery has failed. On the first disc there was a system 32 message bad data and on the last one it says drivers and two other devices have failed
Really appreciate any ideas. I am getting nowhere with HP

Re: Compaq recovery problem

Since it was dropped it could be that your CD/DVD drive may have been affected too. Also check your RAM but test your Cd/DVD drive first on another laptop or using linux live CD (Knoppix or Ubuntu). If it works well with linux live CD then you know it could still be the problem with your HDD or the recovery CDs from HP.

Re: Compaq recovery problem

I thought it might be the DVD rom but everything appears to load up without any problems. It is jusyt in the final stages of installation that problems emerge which seem to point to faults on the recovery discs. But HP have supplied me with 2 so far. How many more will it take before it workd. Maybe I would be better simply buying Vista Home Premium and have done with it?

Re: Compaq recovery problem

But have you tried to test the CD/DVD drive. I suspect it goes kookie as the laptop heats up (use linux live CD or BartPE/XP live CD). Also test your RAM just to be sure (use Memtest86+).
