Dell E1705 will not power on.
I'm a sysadmin, but I have very little knowledge working with hardware issues on laptops. About a month ago I was working on my E1705 and it just abruptly shut off. Nothing I would do would get it to power back on. I tried plugging different power bricks in (my work laptop uses the same type of power supply) with no real effect. After awhile I noticed something unusual. When I plug the brick into the wall the green led comes in indicating that it's getting power. The second I plug the brick into the laptop the light goes out and will not come back on until I unplug it from both wall and laptop, and plug it back into the wall.
The laptop is out of warranty so getting help from Dell is not possible. I was thinking it had to be a problem with the motherboard, but from Dell the motherboard is $500, and on Ebay it's roughly $200. So I'd like to be sure before shelling out money. If anyone has any thoughts on what I could do to narrow down the problem I'd greatly appreciate it. --Aric |

Re: Dell E1705 will not power on.
deffinately sounds like something is shorting out the power. But to be safe about the decision, I would recommend taking out components that can be causing a short. Hard drive, dvd drive, wi-fi card, modem card, memory, and the battery. Once all those are unhooked and out of the laptop, then try to plug the ac adapter in, if you still get no power, then yep, I'd say replace the motherboard (blue raven technologies is a decent place to get them). If you do get power after unhooking everything, then am sure you know this, but will say anyway, start putting components back in 1 by 1 and seeing if you still get power after each one is back into the laptop.
