[SOLVED] Laptop boot failure

Hi, sorry to go on about this again but can anyone help as my laptop will not boot, says "hal.dll" is missing/corrupt. I have copied this file to disc and to memory stick. The only thing is that I can not use the laptop to put the file on or where the file should be. Is there any commands that will take the file off the disc/mem. stick and place the file on the laptop.

Cheers

dave

Re: Laptop boot failure

Have you tried going into XP Recovery Console (using XP install CD) and entering the command below at the command prompt?

expand d:\i386\hal.dl_ c:\windows\system32\hal.dll

where:
d - is your CD/DVD drive

Re: Laptop boot failure

I cannot get the command prompt up.
1. Turn on laptop, comes up with info.
2. I can enter boot menu, setup or network boot
3. Gives a little more info then screen goes blank for about 4 minutes
4. comes up with missing or corrupted file please re-install hal.dll
5. I press any button and the laptop restarts up to go through the above steps again.

2. I can enter boot menu, setup or network boot -- choose CD/DVD drive here as boot device. Make sure XP install CD is in the drive. Also make sure the XP install CD matches the one installed in your laptop (i.e. XP Home if you are using XP Home or XP Pro if you are using XP Pro.). If you do not have XP install CD then you cannot enter the Recovery Console. Your option now is to do a fresh install from the recover partition if your laptop still has one. Of course you can borrow as long as you use your own COA for the laptop.
3. Gives a little more info then screen goes blank for about 4 minutes
4. comes up with missing or corrupted file please re-install hal.dll -- looks like system as accessed the HDD. This should not happen if you follow the advise I gave in item #2.
5. I press any button and the laptop restarts up to go through the above steps again.

Re: Laptop boot failure

Right I have made a bootable disc which gets me to the Windows setup screen which is the blue screen andf looks like this.

Windows Setup
_____________

Please insert the disk labeled
Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 CD
into Drive A:
* Press Enter When Ready

Now I downloaded this file from the Microsoft site to my Desktop and burned it to disk but when I put the disc into the laptop and press enter the laptop checks the disc and brings up the above message again,

Any help will be greatly appreciated

Dave

Re: Laptop boot failure

So you have XP Home install CD and SP2 downloaded on a CD also. Why not try nLite (do it in another PC). There you can slipstream SP2 into your XP Home installation and produce an installation CD that has both.

Re: Laptop boot failure

just a pity cannot just put hal.dll onto a disk/mem. stick and just put that into the laptop to get it working again. Just downloaded nlite and see how that works.

Thanks again

Re: Laptop boot failure

Hi, Can anyone help that may have used nlite before

I downloaded it earlier to make a boot for my laptop with windows xp home ed. with sp2 files. I must be doing something wrong as the laptop is just coming up with a blank screen after reading the disk. If you can tell me what files and what steps to take as I stayed away from a couple of steps as I dont want to do mess up my computer as well.

If any one can help will be greatly appreciated.

Re: Laptop boot failure

any help to get my laptop working again would be great.

Hi Dave,

So have you tried nLite? If you need the steps, try this link:

Re: Laptop boot failure

i have the exact same problem on my HP 6125
the answer to your question is recovery CD
if the machine is still under warranty call them and you will get a free set
if warranty expire then you will have to pay (welll for HP it was 30$)
