compaq nx6125 running really slow

Hi,

I have a Compaq nx6125 with just the basic components that come with the laptop when first purchased.

My problem is that the laptop runs slow during any function at all, ie. starting up from off, browsing folders from the desktop and so on. The best way I can describe the problem is like when you view a video online and your net speed is not quite quick enough so you get jumping like its unable to buffer quick enough.

Even just loading up from being switched off it takes forever and the sound becomes intermittent, just like buffering problems.

This problem has happened before and it was still under warranty so I sent it back to be fixed. The HP people had the laptop for about 2 months before saying they couldnt fix the problem and had to reformat the computer.

Having this done seemed to fix the problem for a little while but as soon as I put a fair amount of data back onto the laptop the problem started again.

Any help in problem solving or fixing this issue would be greatly appriciated.
Thanks in advance

Re: compaq nx6125 running really slow

You need more ram.
Reduce the screen res to 16 bit. Click Start/control panel/display/settings/colour quality. Select 16 bit. Ok.
Click Start/control panel/system/hardware/advanced/adjust for best performance/Ok . back out and reboot.
Go into the bios and reduce the amount of Shared ram to 8 or 16 megs(trial and error).

Yep, add more RAM. Make 1GB at least. Also in addition to RAM, try the steps here: Is your PC running slow...?

Re: compaq nx6125 running really slow

ok thanks ill try these suggestions when i get home from work.

just a quick question though, how come the computer runs fine after a format for ages until I load all of my music back onto it and then bam we are on a go slow again.

I know that there is no corrupted music files because I have the same music on another computer and it runs fine.

thanks again for the reply and I will do the suggested things as soon I can.

Cheers

Re: compaq nx6125 running really slow

the more files you put on the hard drive, the more fragmented the files on the hard drive get. Running the defragment utility helps that out alot.

Re: compaq nx6125 running really slow

that was my thoughts so I ran the defrag even though it said it was not needed but it did not change anything.

I am currently reading through the link posted by triggerfinger and will run through all these options hopefully one will work, it just seemed strange to me that the computer would work fine after a format until I loaded just a few Gig worth of information onto into
