Please help: Dell Inspiron 1525

I just got a new dell inspiron 1525 and bought a wireless router from pluscom (WR-AR2317) I am wanting to connect it to my NTL broadband so as I can get internet on my laptop. As far as Im concerned I have connected all the cables appropriately, and it lets me onto the network, however it just allows me "local access" only & does not let me get on to the internet. The wifi switch has been activated, and the laptop is able to get online when I connect my broadband directly to it (no router, however this is a nuisance because it means I cant move from room to room as my broadband is connected to the wall) so I know theres no faults with actually getting online.
Im not very good with computers, however the instructions made it out to be a straight forward process.
Please can someone in the know talk me through what I should be doing, and let me know which way you are expected to connect the broadband/router/laptop just so I know Im doing it right.
Any input is much appreciated, thanks.
