Dell Inspiron 5150 Help

Ahh!! Help!
I was trying to fix my laptop by cleaning out the heat sink and fan. I followed some steps I found on a website, and got a long just fine. I tried to remove the heat sink/fan unit but couldn't, so i decided to just give up and put the laptop back together.
When I was putting it back together the clear strip (like in this picture) snapped. When I try to turn the computer back on, it starts up for about 5 seconds an then shuts down. Is it because I am an idiot and broke this or is it something else? I can take pictures.
Man this is terrible.
This isn't my computer but the strip on the left is what I broke

Clear strip? Can you point it out in the image?

Re: Dell Inspiron 5150 Help

That seems to be the pull-tab used to pull out the fan/heatsink assembly.

I suggest you remove and put the assembly back again. Follow the steps here:

http://support.dell.com/support/edoc...al.htm#1084976

You will need to reapply the thermal compound when you put the assembly back on the CPU.

Re: Dell Inspiron 5150 Help

Well the problem I am having is the computer now turns on for like 5 seconds and then it just shuts down. The fan turns on and everything. Not sure what I did!!!!
If I messed something up with the heat sink/fan mechanism, does this mean I could have potentially lost data as well?

I am thinking (since you said you happen to accidentally break the pull-tab) that somehow you pulled the fan/heatsink. With this I am assuming you somehow pulled the CPU as dried thermal compound may make the CPU stick to the heatsink. So given that, removing these and mounting them back again would help.

Also check how you mounted the RAM and the video card. Removing them and putting them back into place would help. Directions on how to do this are all in the service manual (see the link again).
