Reformat issues, shut down?
So I have a laptop w/ Vista on it, dv9000 is the model.
I go to reformat the computer, pop in a brand new XP cd and go to erase and re-create the partition on the first drive. It has two drives, btw. So I repartition the first drive and it says shutting down in 5 4 3 2 1. I load it back up and it goes to windows xp intro screen, then says installing windows xp, 39 minuets remaining. After about 30 seconds, the computer shuts down. A couple things that might be noteworthy: Two hard drives previously, one was a slave though, I believe. There were three partitions. The two hard drives and a third called HP RECOVERY or something like that. I didn't erase that partition, but I did repartition the two hard drives. The computer ran really hot when I had Vista on it, but it's not really doing anything that brings it to that head during the reformat, so I don't know if that's the issue? When I get to the XP install part, if I don't have the CD in it says to insert the CD, but it won't shut down until I put the CD in. Is this maybe a windows vista computability issue? Drive failure? I can still repartition all I want, just not install windows. Any thoughts/suggestions? I think it's still under warranty but I don't know if installing a new OS voids that. Hope not :] |

Re: Reformat issues, shut down?
The Hp recovery partition is enabled by pressing the F11 key(usually) at the boot screen, this will render the computer back to the original factory setup.
I would suggest you make a set of Vista recovery disks,( N.B. you can only make one set) before going any further. Addressing the heat issue, is the Notebook on a flat surface ? is there clearence to allow air flow. Please be aware some computers with Vista on them will only run Vista, they are set up that way. Can you try removing the Master h/d and make the slave a master and then install Xp? |
