Problem with HP dv6000 Laptop

Hello,

A few days ago I began having problems with booting up my dv6000. Whenever I attempt to turn it on, it goes to the black screen with the options of running windows in Safe mode, normally, etc. No matter which I choose (or if I let the 30 seconds run down) it begins to start up normally with the windows loading screen. In 5-10 seconds, this loading screen stops, switches to a blue screen with white text for a few seconds, then completely shuts off with a few clicking sounds to be heard. After some time (10 seconds or so), the whole process restarts again. I think the problem is with the motherboard, but I am no expert with computers, so I am hoping somebody here can help me.

Thanks in advance.

Hi mixtap3,

Run HDD maker's diagnostic utility like Hitachi DFT (see HDD Diagnostic Tools link on my sig). Also run Memtest86+ overnight to check your RAM.

Post back any results.

Re: Problem with HP dv6000 Laptop

I don't understand how this works. Do I download it to my laptop because that is where the hard drive is? If this is correct, how would I do that if I cannot even fully boot it up?

Or do I need some kind of device or cable to connect my hard drive to a working computer to run the test?

Most often you need to extract them (the ISO files) to your Desktop. You need ImgBurn or Nero to burn the ISO image into a blank CD. If you are using ImgBurn just right-click and select Burn with ImgBurn. DO NOT COPY THE ISO DIRECTLY TO CD.

Or do I need some kind of device or cable to connect my hard drive to a working computer to run the test?

Re: Problem with HP dv6000 Laptop

Both tools (Memtest and HDD diagnostic) come as ISO files. These can make a bootable CD. Since they are bootable CD, they can run regardless what OS is installed. Just make sure you can boot from your CD drive. You can do this by changing boot sequence in BIOS settings or by choosing a boot device during start up.

As for the HDD diagnostic tool, it is encouraged that you run the diagnostic for your brand of HDD. Unfortunately the list on the link on my sig (HDD Diagnostic Tools) does NOT include Toshiba. If you are using Toshiba, use Hitachi Drive Fitness Test utility (d/load from same page).
