sony vaio pcg-frv31 no os found

Hi, I am getting the message no operating system found....i can get into bios, however, after trying to to system restore using disks, it says primary and secondary ide "none" this happened after i put in the first disk only to realize that the wrong disk was sent to me...it was for pcg-frv30...now I don't have a cd drive and I have since learned I didn't need the disks after all, but when I do F10 to try and access the restore wizard nothing happens...just goes back to the no os screen....I have order an external drive, but I think the disks I have won't work since they are a different model....geesh I hope you can help...i am getting very weary and out of things to try...I have been to sony website and they keep telling me to use disks for F10 for system recovery nothing else on there that helps me...

Hi,

Let me get this straight...

You have problems with the HDD (no operating system installed) and you also have problems with the CD drive? If F10 to access the recovery partition does not work, then may be your HDD is gone. Consider replacing the HDD with a new one.

Re: sony vaio pcg-frv31 no os found

Test if you can boot from your CD drive. Pop in an XP install CD or any bootable CD in your CD/DVD drive. Power ON the laptop. Make sure boot order/boot sequence is set to be able to boot from the CD/DVD drive. It should boot from the CD drive. If NOT, then may be you need to replace the CD/DVD drive.

About the HDD, is this a blank HDD or is Windows installed in it? I suggest you run some diagnostics on it too. Try Hitachi Drive Fitness Test or the HDD brand/maker's diagnostic utility.

Post back results of each test.
