Odd Power Problem

Hi there,

My boyfriend's laptop decided to stop charging a while ago (the light that usually lights up on the front of the laptop when connected to the adaptor does not light up). It would work if we wiggled around the the connector in the DC jack a bit for a few days, and then it stopped working completely. Upon examination, we found that the pin on the DC jack was loose and figured it was a bad jack that needed to be replaced.

We took it to the computer repair store. They had it for a few weeks and when I got it back I was told that they ordered the DC jack but did not put it in because when they opened the laptop up, they noticed some poorly soldered connections and, upon re-soldering, the laptop charged up as normal. When I received the computer back, the battery was indeed charged up.

However, we took it home and plugged it in and it still wouldn't power up. We did, however, notice that the transformer makes a chirping noise when plugged in. I packed the laptop and adaptor up and took it back to the repair store. They plugged it in there, and it connected fine for them! The light lit up and the battery started charging again. They also tested the voltage on the adapter and it read fine (15 V, which is the indicated output).

Brought the laptop home again, and no dice. Still not charging for us. We tried in several different sockets, including a surge protector. No power to the laptop, and the chirping noise at all of them. I do not recall hearing the chirping noise at the computer store, but I also wasn't listening for it. My boyfriend is going to try it elsewhere tomorrow.

I'm wondering if it is a problem with our household current. All of our other electrical appliances work fine, including another laptop (18.5 V output on its adapter).

Does anyone have any suggestions of what the problem might be?

Thanks!

PS: The laptop in question is a Toshiba Satellite, approximately 1 1/2 - 2 years old.

Re: Odd Power Problem

Hi,

Try it in another place like in your boyfriend's house. If you hear any sound from the adapter, there could be something wrong. Bring it back to the repair shop or have another one look at it for a second opinion.
