Destructive Recovery on Compaq Evo N600c?

I have tried the tapping F10 repeatedly at the right spot to no avail. I have no recovery discs. The computer is abyssmally slow and my grand kids have loaded it with so much trash for so long there are no viable restore points. Help me! Thanks. This is my first post and first time on this site. Here's to hoping I can finally solve this issue!

Hah, you could be a brave soldier and boot into safemode, (tap F5 F5 F5 and stop when you see the Windows logo)

Once in safe mode, it's all big and ugly... click Start, Run, type msconfig, click ok.
Click the startup tab and uncheck anything that is considered junk to you. If you don't know what an item is, Google it. After that is done, restart in normal mode and install CCleaner. http://www.ccleaner.com/

In CCleaner's tools menu, choose Uninstall and start removing junk applications. Get rid of all of what you consider junk, and Google items when you don't know what they are. Restart when needed, and after you are finished, use CCleaner's registry cleaner tool.

THEN, do a CCleaner cleanup. This should speed things up and free up some space.

Please note that MSCONFIG is not available on Windows 95 or earlier versions. I think it first appeared in Windows 98. Good luck!

Re: Destructive Recovery on Compaq Evo N600c?

Wow! Thanks for your prompt response. I only have one thing checked under startup in the msconfig menu. It is virtually impossible to download anything from the internet on the laptop because of the sheer unwieldiness of the whole system. It literally takes a half hour to get any page to load up if it loads up at all. All the applications are hopelessly mired. That's why I want to do a destructive recovery. Maybe then I can start with a "clean canvas". Thanks again for your response, but I still need help. By the way, I am running XP Pro on it, which it came with.

Re: Destructive Recovery on Compaq Evo N600c?

All the original discs have been misplaced by my daughter. I have no original support materiel at all. I'm willing to buy discs if any are around as long as they are bona fide originals but if there is a way to do it from the hard drive, I would rather do that. And even though I received it with XP pro installed on it, and it has gone back to the factory once since then, I dont think XP pro is the original OS. Thanks again.

Re: Destructive Recovery on Compaq Evo N600c?

That is the best option so far... to get new recovery discs. Try the HP/Compaq website. I tried doing a quick search but I cannot seem to find one. I suggest you also give HP/COMPAQ support a call and inquire about this.

Re: Destructive Recovery on Compaq Evo N600c?

Thanks, Triggerfinger, for your help and suggestions. I have gone to their website and did searches but havent called and spoken with a real, live person yet. I have also found discs online, but had doubts as to their veracity and authenticity. I guess I will call. Thanks again, all, for your help. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Re: Destructive Recovery on Compaq Evo N600c?

If you cannot find one, you can install XP Pro if you have a valid license to use with this laptop and get the drivers here:

This is just one way. Personally I would still go and order the recovery CD.
