Laptop automatically shutting down

Hi guys,

I am a new member here and this is my first post. The reason I joined this is because of this annoying problem that I have.

Whenever I go to the command prompt or even when I install a new program, my computer automatically shuts down in 1sec only.

But when I use my computers other than the application I mentioned above, I do not encounter this problem.

I thank you all in advance.

Re: Laptop automatically shutting down

Hi,

A few things to check...
  • Operating temperature. If you are reaching 70deg C you can be on the high side and thus could be overheating at times. Make sure your vents and heatsink are free of dust and any obstruction.
  • Run hard drive diagnostic utility. D/load the appropriate tool (see HDD Diagnostic Tools link on my sig) per the brand of the HDD you are using. If hard drive passes the test with flying colors, run CHKDSK /R using an XP install CD.
  • Run SFC /SCANNOW in command prompt.
  • Run Memtest86+ to test your RAM. Test the RAMs individually at 2 passes each. Or you can run the test overnight.

Re: Laptop automatically shutting down

I guess you have not tried them yet

The other tests (aside from sfc /scannow) are run from CD drive. That means you do not need your installed Windows to run. Memtest86+ for example does not need Windows to run. The same with the HDD diagnostic tool. The CHKDSK /R can be run under Recovery Console when you boot with your XP install CD. I suggest you try them first.
