Is the laptop using XP Pro? If so, I believe that would work.

No errors? Did you get to the part where you need to choose R for Recovery Console and such?

Re: DTLDR error msg

That is weird. I hope the CD/DVD drive is not bust. I believe you are using a genuine XP install CD and not a copy. If that is so, I suggest you clean the lens first.

Also run Memtest86+. Test your RAM sticks individually. Run 2 passes for each stick installed. See the link on my sig for the d/load page.

Re: DTLDR error msg

You can run Memtest via CD drive (you do not need a working hard drive or a running Windows installation to do this). If you have PC with a CD writer, d/load Memtest86+ and extract the ISO file on your Desktop. If you use ImgBurn, right click on the ISO file and select Burn with ImgBurn.

Re: DTLDR error msg

Did Memtest run? Any errors?

As for the fan, observe if it runs when you power ON. At that time, it should run for a few seconds as it is being initialized. After that, AFAIK it will only run when needed. So no worries unless you laptop just shuts down without reason as it could mean overheating.
