LCD replacement

Hi!
I'm having some troubles during my lcd replacement. I'm replacing screen in Thinkpad T41p. I've bought a new screen with inverter attached (i geuss that's not the issue). I simple replaced the screen, but my laptop starts up just for a second right now. When i push on/off button the screen does not even blink (stays black all the time). Then i've tried going back to the old screen... it worked. I checked that when i start the laptop with the new lcd with signal (30-pin) cable unplagged (just the backlight connected through the old inverter), laptop starts normally. Whats strange laptop doesn't start now even with the old screen.

If this help my screen was HT14P12-100, and the new one is LTN141P2-L01.

pls, help me :)

Re: LCD replacement

Do you mean that with the 'new' screen the laptop shuts OFF as soon you press the power ON button?

Re: LCD replacement

Yes, it does not even start. i can hear that hdd start, and the leds light up, but whole laptop turns off after 1 sec. During this second my screen stays blank. Although if i turn laptop on with the 30pin pulled out of the screen laptop starts normally... i just can't see anything besides backlight:)

And when it turns off after this second i can't turn it on again. I need to pull out the power cord for a moment (i keep my laptop without battery so the mainboard can lose power for this second), and then i can turn it again for a second.

Re: LCD replacement

There could be a short somewhere. Check/replace the cables and try using the original inverter of your laptop. If the cable is OK may be the LCD itself is defective. Is the LCD new (brand new)?

Re: LCD replacement

yes, it's brand new
Can it be anything else than cable?

As i wrote my lap didn't worked with the new screen, then i've checked the old one, which worked fine, and now both of them (new & old) wont work.

Yep that could be possible. I mean based on what you wrote previously, you tried the new (failed), then you tried the old (worked), put back the new without the 30pin cable (worked)... then now laptop would not start. There could be that possibility the new one has affected other components like the video chip or the motherboard.

Try your laptop with an external monitor just to be sure it is still working. Try it with and without the LCD attached.

Re: LCD replacement

Put back everything together. Make sure ALL cables are plugged in securely. This time use the OLD LCD with the OLD inverter. Reseat the RAM just in case. Hook up the external monitor (power it ON) and power ON the laptop. If symptoms persists do the following:

1. Remove the battery and AC adapter.
2. Press power ON button for 30secs at least.
3. Put back battery and AC adapter (plug it in to wall outlet)
4. Power ON as normal.

If laptop still would not boot up, observe any LEDs coming ON or any beeps. Post back what you find out.

Re: LCD replacement

That is good news. At least your laptop is still working.

Do the CMOS reset and observe if you get any screen if you use the OLD LCD with the OLD inverter. If you get a good screen with the OLD LCD, try it with the NEW inverter. If everything runs OK, try the NEW LCD with the NEW inverter.

Post back what you find out.

Re: LCD replacement

The problem is the new inverter is a different one. It slots that should be connected to the wire going from motherboard differ.
If cmos reset is what You've written about, than it didn't work for me. Today at the lenovo partner service they told me that the fact my laptop works with the external monitor doesn't mean my graphics works fine, it still might be broken.

I've no idea what to do now...

Re: LCD replacement

ANd just to make it clear what i mean "after 1 sec turns off"...

If i turn it on with 30 pin unplugged, and inverter plugged in, then laptop starts normally, if i try to do this with everything plugged in, then laptop shuts down right at the moment my screen started to light in the first case.

It turns off without any sound or blinking.

I've no idea what to do now...

Re: LCD replacement

K, i try to run it with the old inverter... all the tima, cause i can't use the new one (physically). I try to run it with the old lcd as well. Maybe there is samethin you should do after plugggin in the new 30-pin? You just stick it in?

Re: LCD replacement

Now it's more complicated than i thought at first. When i use external mointor it starts, it shows this BIM welcome screen but still the laptop will not boot. it remains with this ibm screen. But when this screen stays i can press the button and go to bios settings.

This issue might be caused by the way i put all the parts in my laptop together.... I'm not sure if everything is connected fine, but i think so. In bios laptop detected cpu, hdd, cd, and ram well.

Re: LCD replacement

When on external monitor, it just hangs in the IBM logo screen? Hmmm, that is not good. OK still using the external monitor, boot from CD drive. Use a bootable CD like Memtest86+. I really suggest using Memtest86+ so you can test your RAM too. Observe if you can boot via CD drive.

Re: LCD replacement

Did you use Memtest? Just to be sure you burned it right, follow the steps:
  1. Download Memtest86+ (see d/load link on my sig).
  2. Extract the ISO file into your Desktop
  3. Use a CD burning tool (i.e. ImgBurn) to burn the ISO image into a blank CD. If you just copied the ISO file directly into a blank CD, it would not BOOT.
  4. If you are using ImgBurn, right click on the ISO file and choose Burn with ImgBurn.

To be able to boot from CD drive you have to change the boot sequence in BIOS settings. Make sure CD/DVD drive comes before the HDD in the list of boot devices.

Re: LCD replacement

Okay. Lets say... my mistake. :)

It normally boots. It just took him few minues to show "wrong date" error. I've fixed it in bios. So now i can say for sure my laptop works, but still only with external monitor.

Re: LCD replacement

So it boots into Windows without error if using external monitor? That means without the external monitor your laptop still boots but you just do not have anything on the LCD.

If it is the backlight or inverter AFAIK you can still see your Desktop if you look closer or put a flashlight at an angle near the screen. If you do not see anything, then it could be the LCD. Try doing this and see if you get anything beyond the dark screen.

The issue with the new LCD is that I do not think it is a replacement of your old one. I think and I am guessing here that you got the LCD based on size and not on part number as it had a different inverter. IMHO the old inverter is incompatible with the new LCD as well. Given this, I think it is best if you get the actual LCD replacement based on the part number. If you know the product number (ex. 2668-khu), do post it here so I can help look for exact replacement.
