EEK! My Packard Bell Story all gather around the camp fire folks

I’ve had my Packard Bell for about 4 years now and about 2 and half years ago I allowed my now ex-boyfriends friend to download something to his mobile. I then later discovered it was porn. Well about a week later I find out that a virus has implanted itself into the kernels operating system, so I pass my laptop on to a “mates” friend who can “solve it”. So about a year later I get it back with an external cd-rom drive because my one has gone bust. Well I load the operating system only to find that its partition in FAT32 not NTFS and I try to reformat it to NTFS but every thing I try doesn’t work.
Things I’ve tried:
Making a network to do it over – failed
Taking out the HDD and reformatting from my desktop (which was how he did it) – failed
Reformatting via USB – failed
Reformatting it with the external cd-rom – failed

I feel like I’ve ran out of options, I really want to get this laptop going again to save me the money of shelling out another 500 for a new one.
Also does anyone know where I could (if I can) purchase another laptop battery? because my one due to it being so old only lasts a few hours before it shuts down on me

The laptop specs:
Make: Packard Bell Easy Note R4360
Warranty: None
*note* I had to get these from the system information but right click my computer since system information in accessories only showed me the windows help and support
Operating System: Windows XP
Service Pack: 2
CPU: Intel Celeron 1.30 Ghz
HDD: Samsung MP0804H
Partition style: Master boot record
Capacity: 76349MB
Graphics Card: Intel
Wireless Card: Realtek wireless LAN

A bit of information about myself:
Im 20, I have been going to college for 4 years (Im about to enter my 5th), I have a level 2 city and guilds and a level 3 diploma in computer hardware and networking and Im about to enter a level 4 foundation degree in communication networks

Hi,

I would definitely try two things:

1. Use the CD drive in the USB external CD drive enclosure and try it on the laptop. If luck is on your side, the connectors could be the same. You may have a problem with the cover/bezel if it would fit but that usually can be removed. This is just a work around, best if you get one for your laptop. May be there are cheap ones in eBay.

2. Remove the hard drive and place in a USB external enclosure and format it on another computer. You said you tried this and failed, may be you can share with us how it failed (any errors?). If it still fails, may be the hard drive is gone. Consider getting a replacement.

the HDD cant have failed becasue it still boots up and works fine its just slow due to being FAT32 not NTFS.
No I didnt get any errors my desktop just didnt detect it. I basically used a laptop to desktop IDE cable converter
I dont understand your first suggestion?? Can you please break it down??
