Erractic process behaviour after recent update
Hi, I hope someone can help me out, losing the will to live...
Ok, I had a HP laptop running win xp service pack 2. last thursday, i was promted to install updates when i went to shutdown the pc. I turned the laptop on later and windows took forever to load up. Pausing at the welcome screen for around 10mins. This was normal every since an update around april time... left laptop to finally load up. The CPU usage was 100% 30mins later with just the desktop open. Im not a PC expert but i do regular pc maintenance and startup items are minimal and clear out temp files daily. I used task manager to monitor what was happening. various process were being used. SVCHOST, and EXPLORER being the biggest culprits. I manually stopped process one by one but with no joy. As this was a work laptop, I called for help and they said they would swap the machine for a new one whilst they repaired mine... The night before I was due to be taking the laptop in for exchange, i unplugged the ac supply. Low battery information balloon popped... Tested battery with multi meter it was ok. Got to the office following day turned my laptop on and it seemed fine. Battery power as well. Exchanged laptop anyway for same model, took home and used just to browse the internet. Logged off that night and was promted at shutdown to shutdown and install updates. I did so (oops). Turned laptop on again after a 3 stage update had finished. The same thing occured on the laptop. 100% CPU usage. If I unplug the ac supply, low battery ballon appears. This seems strange that the exact thing has happen on both machines. Ive searched for windows update problems and did try and update the first laptop to service pack 3, which was successful but with no change top the CPU usage. The company use Trend Micro for anti virus etc but scans come back clean. Is there any news on a clash on this update... im lost and do not know what is causing this to happen. I need to work on the pc this weekend and no tech support from work during the weekends. Can anyone point me to what I should do to try and resolve this??? Thanks in advance. *Headbutts the wall* ![]() I forgot to add that I have tried to rollback to a system restore point which worked correctly but made no difference to the issues. I thought aboutuninstalling the latest update via add remove programs but Im not sure which update it was as it ran before shutdown. The dates in the add remove programs do not list any updates installed for today/yesterday

Re: Erractic process behaviour after recent update
Ok seems no one has any ideas so heres some imformation that ive noticed whilst trying to work on the system...
Ok, CPU usage 100% for around 15 mins then drops of to around 25% after a reboot, but if you try to run anything it jumps to 100% again. The PC is only like this when on AC power, unplug AC power supply, battery notification icon display low battery, but cpu usage drops to 0% and pc runs fine. After a couple of minutes the battery goes critcial and pc hibernates. If you are to plug AC power back in CPU usage goes up again. Battery Icon says battery present and charging when the AC power is plugged in but does not seem to charging. This is on the brand new laptop. Battery was fine before the updates and is believed to be fine now. As I said in the previous post. The exact same thing happened to the 1st laptop. So I dont believe the batteries are faulty. I have tried using differnt outlets in the house that I know have a decent ground etc... but with no joy, PLEASE ANY INPUT WELCOME. Thanks |
