Laptop freezes on the internet
Hello all, my compaq m2105us laptop is ill and I can't find the problem. After turning on my computer and going through the normal boot up the computer will freeze after 10-15 minutes of surfing the web, and I have to remove the battery to get it to shut off. If I have the card turned off or I am doing anything else the computer works fine for as long as i need it. Before this started happening I hadn't made any changes to the computer in a good long time, no new hardware or software and no updated programs, the only change is the antivirus software updating. At first I thought that the driver might have been corrupted so I uninstalled and tried both newer and older drivers with no luck. I swapped out the card with one from another computer (same make and model) and the same thing happened. I tried each stick of ram individually and that wasn't the problem. I figured that there must be something wrong with the os so I restored from a ghost image I made of a fresh installation and the problem still persists. I'm a bit stumped I think it must be a hardware problem, possibly the mobo or processor, but does anyone else have any ideas for me to try?
Here are my specs if it helps at all Windows xp sp 2 Mobile Sempron 2800+ 1.6 GHz 768 mb ram ATI RADEON XPRESS 200M (crappy card, I know) Broadcom 802.11b/g wlan the hp part number is 394462-001 P.S. I originally put this in the windows xp forum and decided to move it here, hopefully thats ok Last edited by BigGeek18; 07-26-2008 at 10:25 AM. Reason: update |

Re: Laptop freezes on the internet
A few suggestions if you do not mind. These are not necessarily in order. Just do what you are comfortable of doing first.
1. Run Memtest86+ on each individual RAM stick. Make 2 passes for each stick. Or you can run it overnight with 2 sticks installed. 2. Run CHKDSK /R in Recovery Console using your XP install CD. 3. Run your hard drive maker's diagnostic tool to test your hard drive. 4. Try a different operating system like a linux live CD. I use PCLinuxOS so I can still connect to the internet via ethernet cable. 5. Check for overheating. Use tools like Speedfan or similar programs. To be sure, clean the vents and heatsink. Remove any obstruction. 6. If this happens when you are WiFi connected to the internet, try connecting WIRED (use ethernet cable) and observe if it still continues to happen. Post back what you find out.

Re: Laptop freezes on the internet
I know it's been a while since you posted this problem but if you haven't been able to fix it yet then I may be of some help I know that this may not be your issue being that I don't know if you use Internet Explorer but I hope it is because it is easy to fix. I had the same problem with my Compaq tablet and I found that it wasn't a problem with my computer at all it turned out to be a problem with internet explorer, I believe that IE has "fixed" this issue for the most part but you would have to update IE, this problem is still occurring for IE users who have Yahoo toolbar installed and there is no "fix" currently for the freezing when using IE with Yahoo Toolbar. The solution I personally used was to stop using Internet Explorer all together and only use Mozilla and I even have Yahoo Toolbar installed and have not had a problem since.
Please let me know if you've resolved the issue. |
