[SOLVED] Need CD Driver!

OK, i have a laptop which has the cd drive:
Sony CD-RW CRX850E
but, this cd drive isn't installed on the laptop.
I need the driver installation file, but i cant find it ANYWHERE!
It is a discontinued product, and sony doesn't provide the driver for this cd drive.
Could anybody help me find the driver installation file????
I've been looking for ages now, but i decided to ask for help on these forums.
I would really appreciate any help.

Ver. Windows installed? XP has native drivers..

Hi, Jav
You shouldn't need drivers for CD or DVD Drives, as the Operating System supplies them.
What model of laptop do you have?
Is the drive recognised in your BIOS Setup?

My laptop has xp. I dont have any of the cd's that were supposed to come with the computer. I got the laptop fixed because it had a virus on it, and when i got it back the cd drive wasn't recognised by the computer. Because i have no cd's for the laptop, i just need the driver to be installed on the laptop in order to allow the cd driver to work.

P.S. i will check if the drive is recognised in my bios (i doubt it will be) and i'll get back to you.

ok on the bios, under boot, it does show the cd-drive, but on windows the computer doesn't recognise it, and says 'Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing.'. Doesn't that mean i need to install the driver? If so, does anybody know where i can get the driver from?

It's telling you that it cannot install the drivers because it has a problem.
Try this solution from microsoft........

Download the Guided Help.

If it doesn't work, post back with the Manufacturer & Model of your laptop.

Windows XP is install an running / open device manager under cd drive devices does your cd drive appear there with(!), if it does r/click properties use driver update ...

ok, the laptop says its an error code 39, and this is what microsoft says:

Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

Recommended resolution

Reasons for this error include a driver that is not present; a binary file that is corrupted; a file I/O problem, or a driver that references an entry point in another binary file that could not be loaded.

Uninstall the driver, and then click Scan for hardware changes to reinstall or upgrade the driver.

On the General Properties tab of the device, click Troubleshoot to start the Troubleshooting Wizard.

However, i do not know how to uninstall the driver or reinstall it.
Could anybody tell me how to do this step-by-step?

Click start> settings > control panel > system > device manager > disk drives > your CD drive should be listed there , right click on the cd drive, choose uninstall > once uninstalled click on action "top of screen" scan for hardware changes, this should install the cd drive.

If that makes no difference, use the link I posted previously to clear the Upper and Lower Filters of the Registry.....this method is also applicable to Error Code 39, as stated on the Microsoft webpage.

thnx for the replies u guys. omgmissinglink, the microsoft's recommended solution had no effect, the computer is still saying exactly the same thing. however, i will try out the other solution houndog777 and will get bak to you as soon as its done. just want to thank both of you for your help so far ;)
