[SOLVED] graphics card has dissapeared!!![moved from xp]
I had to reinstall windows xp pro SP2 on my sony laptop the other day, but i encountered several problems. Basically all my drivers (sound, modem etc...) had all been uninstalled. It took me a while but i managed to aquire the relevent drivers for these after a lengthy search. However my graphics card does not appear in task manager so I am unable to install the video drivers!!!
Does anyone have any idea what i can do to get my NVIDIA GEforce 6400 graphics card to install itself?! baring in mind that it doesnt appear in device manager? thanks! |

Re: graphics card has dissapeared!!!
Hello Ricko123
![]() Go here to the NVidia site and find the correct drivers for your card. Download them and run the file. The drivers will be installed and your video card will then show up in Device Manager .

Re: graphics card has dissapeared!!!
I am not sure about Vista, as I have not used it much....
But what I would do is go to Control Panel and click on "Add New Hardware" and then let it search and it will find your graphics card. Then it will be able to install it... Withdrawn... I agree with the previous poster.... Last edited by TBird0420; 07-25-2008 at 01:45 PM. |

Re: graphics card has dissapeared!!!
for some reason (and this has always been the case) when I try and run nvidia graphic drivers It says that its not relevent to my hardware then closes itself. So usually I go to device manager and install the drivers from there. And TBird when I click on add hardware, it does not appear on the list of things that I can install.

Be sure to choose your card model and model number in the driver chooser. If you did in fact do just that, you COULD install 7-Zip, extract the driver pack .exe and forcefully install the driver by right clicking the device in your device manager and manualy selecting the nv4_disp.inf using the "Have Disk" button. You will see a list of devices, choose yours from the list. You will then see a warning about damages caused by using the wrong driver.
I have used a GeForce 8600GT driver for my GeForce 8600M GT before without any damage. It's not smart to use the wrong driver, but sometimes it does not hurt. EDIT: It would be the VGA Compatible. Be sure you know the exact model number, please don't burn out your card. Last edited by af3; 07-25-2008 at 01:56 PM. |
