Acer Aspire 5100 DVD+DL Burning Problems

This just happened recently, I have burned around 30 DL discs so far with pretty good success. However, a few days ago, I tried burning another disc, and the drive started making loud "skipping" noises at around the 50% mark. I figured it was just a bad disc or something, I tried another disc, and another burn, same thing, at 50%.

i just recently got a batch of new DVD's, and I tried again, and it just stops at 50% and makes loud noises. I have no idea how to resolve or troubleshoot this issue. I don't want to waste anymore DVD's.

It seems to me like it is having trouble when it needs to switch to the second layer. Can this be some sort of driver/software issue or is it the hardware that is dying? Any1 else have this problem? I would really appreciate the help. My next option is to buy an external DVD burner, but i don't really want to spend the money if my drive is fixable.

btw, this computer is about 2 years old and i am using Windows XP. Also, it seems like burning normal DVD's and CD's works just fine, its just the dual-layer discs that are giving me trouble. thanks.

Re: Acer Aspire 5100 DVD+DL Burning Problems

It sure looks like a hardware problem. Just to help you isolate, use your drive with an external enclosure so you can connect it to another PC. Try burning DL discs from there.

Re: Acer Aspire 5100 DVD+DL Burning Problems

thanks for the quick response. unfortunately, i don't have an external enclosure for a laptop drive or another computer to test it out in (i'm away at school, i have tons of computers back home, lol).

I was thinking about reformatting my computer. I guess my next question is, is whether this is most likely a hardware issue, or could reformatting solve the problem? reformatting is a pain, but if it would allow me to save some money on buying a new drive, i am willing to give it a shot.

you think it's worth trying to reformat and try burning another disc? or should i not even attempt this because it will most likely not solve anything anyway. also, is there any kind of diagnostics i can run to see what the problem is? would doing a "test-burn" with say IMGBurn give me any useful information?

thanks again for the quick response.

Re: Acer Aspire 5100 DVD+DL Burning Problems

well you can try deleting the upper/lower filters. a reformat and reinstallation is always an option but it could take long. the way i see it, if you cannot test the hardware, then may be you can go with the reformat. if it works... lucky you

do post back how it goes.

Re: Acer Aspire 5100 DVD+DL Burning Problems

I also had this problem with my acer 5100 i was told the Burners on these computer are poorly built and after around the 30 burnt CD's or DVD's the burner will stop working i got a new replacment drive and it works fine and this problem has not occured since so i would say most likely a hardware problem
