Laptop (hardware??) issue
First of all, I am currently using an Asus G2S gaming laptop. It is quite new (bought in january) and I'm thinking the problem is hardware related. The problem that I am having is that my laptop will only run for ~5-10 minutes before freezing and having to be manually shut down. This has been happening for several days now, and i am quite positive that it isn't virus or spyware related. I even went as far as to completely reinstall vista in hopes of solving the problem. The only thing i can think of is that about a week ago my laptop was turned on and plugged in during a thunderstorm, which may have caused some potential damage to the hardware, but i am not sure. What happens is: i am doing something such as installing a game and the install freezes but for maybe 15-30 seconds i can still do things in other windows before EVERYTHING completely freezes and i must manually shut it off.

Re: Laptop (hardware??) issue
Hi,
Have you checked if it is overheating? Use something like SpeedFan or similar and check your temps. You can also visually check the vents for any obstruction or presence of too much dust. Get a can of air and shoot some thru the vents/heatsink. That would help minimize if not remove all the dust inside. Additionally, run Memtest86+ to test your RAM. Run it overnight to thoroughly test all the RAM modules installed.

Re: Laptop (hardware??) issue
I really doubt that overheating is an issue because it seems to do this regardless of how long it has been running, and I think running a memory test overnight might be a little difficult because it freezes every 5-10 minutes.
Also, for what its worth, I noticed that when I am doing something that strains the hard drive (it gets loud) and then that application freezes, the hard drive gets quiet again. But, even after the hard drive has become silent, I still have 15-30 seconds in which i can access other programs before my system completely freezes up. |
