HP Power Setting Reversal

I have an HP Pavilion zv6000, and shortly after I bought it something strange and intensely annoying periodically occurs. Out of the blue, at completely random intervals, the power settings reverse so that when it is plugged in the screen dims, and then when unplugged and running only on battery the screen brightens to full power. Fiddling with the power settings doesn't change anything. To fix it I have to repeatedly restart, first with the battery out and the cord in, then with the cord out and the battery in, then both in. It's progressively gotten more difficult to resolve - at first one of these cycles would set things right, but now it may take several days and 30 or more cycles (which, given my slow start-up time, takes *forever*).

Any ideas?
