Firstly, thank you for any assistance provided.
I have a Compaq Presario V5000, its' a little over a year old, but for the past several months, I've been experiencing "screen freeezes", "screen black outs", "complete shut downs, w/ fully charged battery and wall plug in" Sometimes, when I start up the power button flashes non stop, and the computer does not startup. During the screen freezes, and black outs..the power button and other lite options still function including cd-rom drive..however the keyboard isn't functional. This has caused my laptop to crash 2 times because of always having to manually restart and shut down the laptop during freezes. FEED BACK from the computer: Blue screens, suggesting new hardware failed to install properly, ect. Bios memory dumps, and shadowing. However, I haven't installed any new hardware since purchase. I've contacted Compaq and went through all the procedures of updating the BIOS, and the hard drive passed the hard drive test. It was recommended also that I should probably look into buying a new CMOS/ RTC battery...but I do not want to waste money on something I possibly do not need if it's not a direct cause to why these things are happening. So I could use all the help possible! Thanks |

Re: Compaq Presario V5000, shuts off and freezes frequently
it could all be related to overheating. clean the vents/heatsink. make sure nothing blocks the air path (i.e. dust). use NHC or Speedfan to check your temps. run Memtest86+ to test your RAM just to be sure you don't have a RAM issue.

Re: Compaq Presario V5000, shuts off and freezes frequently
I've been running the temp test, so far I'm getting these numbers
Hdo: 40C temp 1: 72 C (increasing) temp 2: 0 core: 70 C (increasing) I tried running the ISO file but it only to me to a folder that said boot, so I'm kinda confused on how to use it. Can you help me there? Also, I just looked into cleaning the vents and air ways so I'll handle that during this process as well. Thank you so much |

Wow, 70 degrees celsius is 158 degrees fahrenheit! It's a wonder your computer hasn't melted!
I have read that it's possible for the screws on the heatsink to work themselves loose. That's another possiblity, in addition to the vents being clogged with lint. I would peruse the manual and take the bottom or top cover off. It's not difficult if you have a little mechanical skill. Just be sure to label every single screw; you will not remember when it comes time to put the screws back. Good luck, let me know how it goes. |
