Toshibe Satellite LCD goes white...

Greetings,

I have a Toshiba Satellite M35X-S149. It has started to act up when I use it. it *MAY* be coincidental but the issue started a few days after I loaded ADOBE CS3. I do not think it is related, but I offer that as a possible conflict. I have since un-installed it and I have the same issue. I can use the laptop for anywhere from 5 minutes to 45 minutes and then it goes white and is not functional. Will not take any input, no disk activity light. I took the unit apart and re-seated all cables and boards. Still no joy. The problem is intermittent.

I connected an external monitor and used both the LCD and the monitor. When the issue reared its ugly head, The LCD went white, as it always has, and the external monitor went black at the same time. Nothing but a reboot would bring it back.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Paul.../NH

Hi Paul,

Have you tried using another operating system like XP/BARTPE or linux live CD (knoppix or PClinuxOS)? I think this could be irrelevant but it would surely help tell us if it is hardware or Windows that is acting up.

Re: Toshibe Satellite LCD goes white...

Hello TriggerFinger, tnx for the reply. Upon your suggestion, I did two things. 1. I booted up to the windows login screen and just waited. In about 4 minutes LCD went white. (monitor went black). 2. I then booted off of a Knoppix CD. It booted fine, found all the hardware, and then in about 2 minutes into using it the LCD went white, and the monitor black. This is starting to sound like an intermittent hardware based issue to me. Any suggestions as to where to start. Inverter ? Video Chip, Memory. Does the video memory share RAM like on some desktops ? Thanks

Does it mean an external monitor is still attached when you tried the 2 things you noted above? Try removing the LCD video cable from the system board/motherboard and run totally on external monitor. Observe if monitor turns black in a few minutes (use Knoppix still).

-- if external monitor is affected by the LCD turning white or external monitor turning black, I suspect the video chip. Yes, AFAIK most laptops share RAM with video.
