Hi,
Having managed to get hold of a copy of XP to reinstall after a system 32 error, XP installed fine with no problems, but need to install SP2, SP2 starts fine but then sticks on "checking product key" it seems to be stuck(?) like this for hours. Is this normal?? I am downloading SP2 from the microsoft update site, have tried to find a cd of it but there does not appear to be one anywhere. The laptop is a PackardBell easy note L4.

Re: Xp Sp2
Tried that link, but still not happening. The file downloads fine and extracts fine, I accept the eul and the install starts, but it gets to the product key check and it stops again. As the copy of XP I got was an upgrade for another pc I used the s/n from the laptop, could this be the problem??

Re: Xp Sp2
Now I am not sure about this but I do not think you can use an upgrade version of XP to install a fresh copy (unless you have an older version of Windows in the HDD or CD).
EDIT: http://www.windowsreinstall.com/inst...winxp/XPug.htm

Re: Xp Sp2
The cd is a retail copy from Microsoft, it was bought to upgrade from 98 to xp. It did not come with any system. I am trying to use the key on the laptop from the original install of xp. I had to wipe the other version of xp off because on restart there appeared to be an system 32 error and a file was missing, I tried to use F11 but that did not work to get me into the recovery section, used a recovery disk off the packard bell website but that did-not do anything it just asked me to insert master CD 1.

Re: Xp Sp2
So even though the disk is a orange colour with microsoft/XP all over it, it is not a OEM copy?? When it was bought it replaced '98' on another system it will not install SP2?? there is a key with it but not sure if it is the key for '98' or the one that came with the disk, I do not want to install with that key if it is for one machine only and I am breaking the law.
