Help with Acer aspire 5100
I have an Acer Aspire 5100 that runs windows xp. I tryed to boot it up few days ago. I got as far as where you put your password. I never had a password so all I ever had to do was hit enter and my desk top would come up. But now it dont work. I even tryed to get into safe mode and that dont work. Seems like my keyboard and touch pad dont work. I even put an eternal keyboard and mouse on it and that didnt work. So any help would be appreciated alot.

Re: Help with Acer aspire 5100
Hi Lady4jc,
As per forum rules, we cannot help regarding password issues. About the keyboard/touchpad/mouse, go into BIOS settings and see if the keyboard works. You can also use a live CD (XP BartPE/Linux Live CD - ex. Knoppix). If somehow your keyboard works in BIOS and in a Live CD environment, then you know the keyboard problem could be caused by Windows.

Re: Help with Acer aspire 5100
Hi,
so you cannot enter BIOS settings? have you tried an external keyboard yet? if you have an external keyboard, use that first and try to enter BIOS settings.

Re: Help with Acer aspire 5100
sorry to ask this again. i just want to be sure that even with an external keyboard, you still cannot go into BIOS settings? on the other hand, you can still boot to Windows but cannot use it because you have no keyboard nor a mouse/touchpad?
i ask this and want to be very sure of this because this could point to a motherboard failure. remove the hard drive and the cd drive. boot into BIOS. use laptop keyboard if it works, if not use external keyboard. if the above does not work, put back the cd drive and use a live CD (knoppix or PCLinuxOS) if it works in your laptop. boot into linux and test if you get your keyboard and mouse/touchpad working

Re: Help with Acer aspire 5100
That is not good. I suggest you have your keyboard tested on a similar laptop or get a replacement keyboard for testing. If it works with a new keyboard that would rule out the motherboard. However is symptoms continue then it could be the motherboard.
I guess it is best if you also get a second opinion on this. Bring it to a repair shop and have them diagnose what the problem really is.
