dell latitude d800 fan problem

alright, i have a few problems going on right now that just appeared over night.
i'll list by things that i noticed happening first
A:vertical lines and other display errors during boot-up and in windows
B:after being on for a minute or so the computer locked up (no blue screen).
C:i rebooted a few times and same thing happened. then i noticed the fan wasn't spinning at all; not during boot-up and not at anytime other time.

so i have a few Q's here. is this all related to the fan not spinning? can overheating cause the graphics to go all screwy sometimes (i say sometimes because i tested it later today when it was cool, and while there were still some display errors-ones i can live with- those horrible lines were gone) and lockup like that? how can i tell if the fan is dead or it's another problem?

oh i wrote this from my desktop

Re: dell latitude d800 fan problem

Hi,
A few things to try (not necessarily in order).
1. Try it with an external monitor.
2. Run Memtest86+ to test your RAM. Run it overnight to be sure.
3. Clean the vents and heatsink (make sure you blow out most if not all of the dust out).
4. Use a bootable CD like a linux live CD (knoppix, pclinuxos or ubuntu) or an XP/BartPE.

Do post back what you find out after trying each one of the above.
