Incredible lag[moved from xp]

Hi all! Newbie here, so I apologise if I have posted this in the wrong place.

On July 6th, I turned my Dell Inspiron 6400 on and for some reason, it takes hours to load. I timed to last night - To get from the log in screen to the desktop, it takes roughly 3 hours.

Whereas in Safe Mode, everything works fine.

When I switch it on, all the usual things happen, apart from the fan slows down a bit. When I do reach the log in screen, the light displaying the Hard Drive is 'processing' stays on (This does not happen in Safe Mode).

I have ran a Disk Defrag and Anti-Virus Scan, but they find nothing. I have not had an internet connection since June due to moving house, so I'm ruling the possiblity of a Virus down to the lowest.

I have gone through the Device Manager in Safe Mode, and nothing seems to have a problem. Running a System Restore in Safe Mode also doesnt seem to fix the problem, so if I be really patient and try it in Normal mode, it may work?

I have been looking for support everywhere and cannot find anything that backs up my problems.

I hope someone can help me here.

I should also add that I get a Runtime Visual C++ Error window appearing telling me about my Roxio Shared software.

Re: Incredible lag

Hello JayTeeBee

Have a look in msconfig for any Roxio entries and disable them.
Start/Run and type in
msconfig
OK

Startup Tab
Keep the page open then go to one of the links below. They will tell you what all the entries are and whether you can disable them or not. They will also identify any malware. While you are in there disable everything which is not needed to run at start up

http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php

http://www.castlecops.com/StartupList.html

Read the Key at top of page. Use the Search box to check all your entries

When you reboot you will get a message saying you have started in "Selective Startup" Click "Don`t show this message again" then OK

.

Re: Incredible lag[moved from xp]

Well, I'm still suffering from taking some of these steps.

When I try to disable a number of the Start-Up options on MSConfig, I get an 'Access Denied' error telling me I need to log into the Administrators account, both on Normal and in Safe mode.

I am the administrator, and even if I log into the Administrators account in Safe Mode, I get the same error message.

I also can't remove Roxio, as in Safe Mode, I get a message telling me that the Windows Installer Service cannot be started due to running in Safe Mode.

It also seems to take forvever when trying to access the Add/Remove Program window aswell in Normal Mode.

Which antivirus are you running? That is a common message when you have McAfee installed ( or other which protects registry keys). They insist on this protection, afraid that a hacker could use this route to disable virus-checking. So just ignore the messages, msconfig is actually working as you would expect

As an experiment, shut down your antivirus and uncheck it in msconfig. Reboot......is it any faster?

Remember to rechek antivirus in msconfig later

Re: Incredible lag[moved from xp]

Nope! Still slow as hell!

Although, now it tends to freeze for prolonged periods after I let it load for 2 hours.

Try the steps here:

Is your PC running slow...?

Some steps may need an internet connection.
