Idea Thinkpad Volume Key Stuck, No Volume

I have IBM (Thinkpad) 600X.
My laptop keyboard has a stuck key. ("s").
It shows in post as error 8611 (keyboard) 1B 301 (for the 's' key).

Since its a very old laptop, I AM NOT INTERESTED IN GETTING A REPLACEMENT".
I am using a external USB keyboard. It works very fine.

But problem is Few more keys are stuck. Among them PAGE UP button also does not work. But PAGE UP button works as INCREASE VOLUME when pressed in combination with FN.

Now problem is accidentaly my younger brother decreased the Volume using Fn + Page down (it works fine). Now there is no sound.

I REPEAT I AM NOT INTERESTED IN REPLACING KEYBOARD, but only increasing volume.
I have already tried the following without success :

1. pressed FN (from laptop keyboard) + page up (from ext keyboard)
2. removed CMOS battery, left it out for a day, then inserted.
3. Volume from control panel (or multimedia settings) and media player is full.

i just want to increase the volume, as mostly the laptop is used to listen to songs (and watch videos) by my siblings.

all help will be appreciated.
i am comfortable with opening the laptop , or any other technical handlings.

thanks in advance

Re: Thinkpad Volume Key Stuck, No Volume

Sorry for wrong reference above. 8611 - Trackpoint error (it also does not work). 301 is keyboard and 1B is the code for 's'.

Re: Thinkpad Volume Key Stuck, No Volume

Hi,

I am not sure if this will help but I hope you will try this. Hotkeys as they call it are the keys that you use to control functions like volume thru your keyboard. Try uninstalling this in ADD/REMOVE.

Also if that is not present try uninstalling ThinkVantage or Thinkpad configuration utility. You can download these from IBM website anyway. The plan here is to remove any function control from the keyboard and at least give back the controls to the mouse (use external USB mouse if trackpoint is not working).

Re: Thinkpad Volume Key Stuck, No Volume

first i regret a late reply (had to go out of the town)

I tried un-installing Thinkpad configuration utility, but it did not help.
regarding un-installing Keyboard, it shows in device manager as standard 101/102 keyboard and does not un-install , it says its important to work on the device.

For that matter i am using an external mouse and keyboard. I only want to increase the volume.

your help is appreciated.
expecting more troubleshooting steps from your side.

Re: Thinkpad Volume Key Stuck, No Volume

i am sorry but i cannot remember saying 'uninstall' the keyboard.

anyhow, we both know the only solution to this is for you to replace the stuck keyboard. what you are asking is for you to adjust the volume without having to do any replacement. may be what you can try is to remove the keyboard from it physically. if you have opened the laptop up, may be you can pull the keyboard cable from the motherboard.

try it and post back what happens.

Re: Thinkpad Volume Key Stuck, No Volume

Okay.. i have opened my laptop previously.. (last time i had to replace my processor),
Okay will give it a try.. but only on Saturday,.. other days I am really too busy to do that.

So my next post will be in exact 48 hours after this post..

Only removing the keyboard and plugging in will do????
Or is there any hardware fixes i need to do???????????

thanks for your co-operation

Re: Thinkpad Volume Key Stuck, No Volume

Sorry but I think your best option is to replace the keyboard with a new one.

I suggest you get a second opinion from a repair shop. I believe they have the tools to test and can recommend a more creative solution to your problem.
